I would say take a collectivo down and a cab back. And whatever the cab driver says offer 33% less.

Sounds like a plan. If a taxi is the only way to get to Gran Cenote, I hope there are taxi's hanging around to get a lift back to town with.

Although, if worse comes to worse, a 1.5 mile isn't too bad of a walk. Thanks for the distance info James, it's hard to get a grasp on that from any maps I've seen. -- still working on some bartering phrases.

If you're taking the taxi from the intersection in Tulum where the collectivos let you off ask the taxi driver if you can call him when you're done to come back and get you. The driver we had asked the attendant if he would call him with his cell phone to come back and get us.

When we were finished at the cenote we asked the attendant to call and he asked for the cab number on the taxi, of course we had no idea we were supposed to take note of it, something you should be aware of.

Anyway he called another taxi for us, it never showed up and he ended up just giving us a lift into town, very nice guy, more than made up for the 40- pesos we paid to get to Gran Cenote because he wouldn't take any $$ from us.

It is not a long walk, but the road is narrow, and they drive very fast. I don't think there was any shoulder at all on this road, probably would not be a relaxing walk to say the least.

If there is a tour van leaving when you are you could try to get a ride back with them too. Don't think you'd be stranded long. Check out the hanging birds nests right at the entrance while you're waiting.....
