Does anyone have the "ins and outs" on the Iberostar Tucan?
First time to visit Mexico. Booked us at the IB Tucan. 3 Adults, 1 teenage boy, 1 "tween" girl....
Any suggestions while at the hotel for things to do, see, eat etc.? Any view better than others? What about restaurant, reservations or no? Thanks so much...

Hi, welcome to the board. My husband & I are big fans of Iberostar Tucan. Next week we will be staying there for our 4th time. It is a very nice, clean, family-friendly resort. We have never stayed ocean view, so I don't know about those suits. There are many excursions/day trips you can do from this or any resort/hotel/etc in the area. Look around this site and you'll find tons of info. Also, you can do a search for Iberostar Tucan and find other threads with info on it. You'll have an awesome time. When are you going? Oh - also, if you booked with a travel company like GoGo or Apple, they have reps in the lobby of the resort with excursion packages. Have fun!
BTW, as far as reservations, you'll need it at their formal restaurants but there's 2 buffets which you do not have to have reservations for. |

Water and ice are purified so you don't have to worry about that, and the food is good. They leave a basket of fresh fruit in your room. There's also fruits and vegetables at the buffets, fruit nectar in the morning buffet. I love their banana milk at breakfast. Yum!

Ice is purified but tap water???
I would simply use the bottled water the hotel provides in your mini fridge and at all the bars, restaurants, etc. It's there, you paid for it so I would take advantage of that and not drink tap water.

I'm sorry if my post didn't come out clear. I was trying to say its safe to drink the water served in the restaurants as well as the ice. They do keep a big jug of water (and I think individual water bottles) in the mini fridge.

We have stayed there 3 times. (With and without) kids and teens. It is a nice place with plenty to do. There's nothing like telling a teen "Yup, help yourself. Food, drinks, ice cream, whatever you want... Room service? Knock yourself out. All day, all night. Till 12:00 am anyway. Hungry after after that? The buffet is open till 2:00.
No shortage of food for teens. You will love it.The shows are (okay) and the food is (okay). I don't have much to compare to here but it's nice enough that we have continued to go. Our last trip was the Barcelo farther south. A much larger resort with a much more beautiful beach. The grounds and atmosphere (and the close proximity to Playa) will make the IB a nice first visit for you. Last edited by Uno; 05-11-2010 at 12:09 AM.. |

One thing about the beach at the Tucan...I haven't been there since the beach restoration, so a local will need to confirm this, but I could swear that the Tucan/Quetzal was part of the strip of beach that was restored just a few months ago. The beach that was very eroded is now a wide stretch of gorgeous sand to rival the beach at the Barcelo.

We had all the water worries when we first visited Mexico at Iberostar Cozumel in 2000 (NO issues). We have since been to Iberostar Tucan 2 times, in April
2009 and 2010. Everything at bars/restuarants etc. is safe to drink, just use the bottled jug of water to brush your teeth. Enjoy!! Mitch |

I have been to the resort 10 times
I will be back for the 11th year in September. Obviously I think it's a great place. There is plenty to do for all ages: beach and pool games, exercise and dance classes, bike excursions, ceramic painting and on rainy days a move in the show theater. Always something going on. You can also rent mopeds and ride through Playacar. Town is only a few miles ( and a $5 cab ride) away and there are some great shops and restaurants.
The buildings near the beach are the best buildings; 11 or 12 on Tucan side and building 21 or 22 on Quetzal side. Ask for a room that looks in towards the pool. If you don't mind stairs the upper floors have a great view. In my opinion the Jr. suites are not worth the upgrade charge as you will spend little time in the room. The food is good but after a few days it becomes all kind of the same. The ala cartes are all good, the steak house is outside and the others are in the AC. The lasagna florentine at the Italian is really good as are all of the fish options at both the Italian and the Mexican hint #1 even though you only get a set number of reservations you can check daily and get extra for the evening if there is a spot.I enjoy the entertainment The Star Friend team does a great job. Thursday is the Mexican folklore show ( Run on, and gets a little boring) and on Saturday the alternate between a magic show which is really good and a Mayan show which is interesting if you like history and men is skimpy loin clothes dresses as animals. hint #2 get there early and sit on the upper level so you will have a breeze. After The show you can keep going at the on-site disco. It can be hit or miss depending on occupancy. Starts happening around 11, and can be a lot of fun ( I am sure your teens will want to scope it out). Hint #3 sit to the right as you come in that is the more happening side, and you will meet lots of people at the bar.Watch your step as there are a few steps inside that are hard to see in the dark. hint #4 the alcohol you see is not all they have they hide the call brands under the bar ( This goes for all the bars in the resort). hint #5 use the back path to come home at night, it is a straight shot and is much easier to do in the dark, especially after a few drinks.as far as off site excursions, I have always found it less expensive to book these myself (Cab and pay at the gate) than to use the hotel or Lomas travel. hint #6 Lomas has a pushy sales pitch beware. Also book your airport return with them right away of the will call and harass you starting as early as 8am. Xcaret ( Be sure you do the night show Skip the last part of this show, if you did the folklore show at the hotel, it's the same) and Xel ha are both a lot of fun.and yes the water and all fruits and veggies are safe. Hope this was helpful. feel free to PM me if you have questions. Have a great trip and tell the Star Friend Team that the angels said Hola.. Last edited by yogagirl; 05-13-2010 at 04:11 PM..
