Hi All!! Haven't seen any references to Barcelo Maya Beach Resort. We're planning a trip there, and just looking for a little input. Thanks!

This AI is not in Playa. If you search the forum you'll find at least my references to it's polluting of local cenote systems.

We just returned from a week long stay at the Barcelo Maya and had a wonderful time. No, it wasn't perfect. But the things that weren't so good did not, by any means, take away from the things that were great about the resort. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. The beach was awesome! Do watch out for some rocky areas when entering the water, though. There were non-motorized water toys to use. There was always something to do if you like activity or, if you don't like activity, there were a ton of beach chairs to lounge on. By the pool they had water aerobics, dance lessons, bingo, and crazy games. I got in on the women's arm wrestling competition (the crazy game for the day). Out of twelve women, I ended up champion (by pure luck I think). I won a bottle of tequila and a keychain for my efforts. They also had ping pong, darts, and mini-golf, among other things. I read a lot of negative comments about the food before our trip. We thought the food was good. We did find it to be better on the Garden side, though. There were some things that we didn't like, but then we just learned to avoid them. They had lobster and steak night on Thursday which we thought was really good. There's entertainment every night. Some of the shows seemed a little repetitive from what we had already seen, but for the most part, we enjoyed them. Our favorite was the Michael Jackson impersonator on Friday night. My husband played a lot of beach volleyball. Even though it was only the two of us on this trip, people we didn't know were very good about inviting my husband to join in on the game. We also played tequila volleyball in the pool one day. I'll leave you thinking about that one! The service in the bars was not so great, but when we needed another drink, my husband just got up and got us one himself. The beds were HARD as I had also read on the internet before our trip. But after a busy day and a few drinks in the evening, we had no trouble sleeping on them.
Sorry to get so long winded, but it was a great trip for us. Oh, one more thing to warn you about. If you get a musty smelling room, which we did, just run the air conditioning continuously for as long as you can on your first day there. By the next day, the smell should be gone. I think the musty smell comes from the humidity level. It is very hot and humid in the Riviera Maya area. Thank goodness it cools off at night. Hope you have a wonderful time! I sure wish we were going again!
