suspected drug deaths in Cancun

Associated Press article that just came out this morning:

6 Bodies found in Cave near Cancun, 3 with hearts cut out

CANCUN, Mexico — Police discovered six dead bodies in a cavern near the tourist resort of Cancun on Sunday, three of them cut open and their hearts removed.
Authorities are investigating the identities of the four men and two women found dead in the natural cave, said Francisco Alor, the Quintana Roo state attorney general.
"They were apparently tortured and their chests were opened to remove the hearts," Alor's office said later in a statement.
Three of the bodies had the letter "Z" carved on their abdomens — a possible reference to the Zeta drug gang, though officials did not make an explicit connection to cartel violence that has plagued many parts of Mexico.
More than 22,700 people have died nationwide in drug violence since late 2006, when President Felipe Calderon sent soldiers and federal police to battle the cartels.
Also Sunday, armed men in two cars barged into a girl's coming-out party in the southwestern town of Coyuca de Catalan, sparking a deadly gunbattle.
Some of those attending the "quinceanera" celebration were also armed and returned fire, Guerrero state police said in a statement. Two partygoers and one attacker were killed, while three people were wounded.
Police have not yet determined a motive, but the area is plagued by drug trafficking.

Since when is the 'area' plagued by drug trafficking?

Yes, bound to happen , If anyone thinks drug related crimes are confined to border areas you are living in lala land. But in the real world use common sense and stay away from the cookie jar and all should be fine, unless your at the wrong place at the wrong time,, but that can happen anywhere in the world I figure.

Since when is the 'area' plagued by drug trafficking?

Just one instance--but I found it interesting because I never heard or read anyhting about it. While in Hospiten ICU last December, A young man was brought in unconscious. He was tall, looked like he might have been athletic, blond. He remained unconscious for several hours and when he started to talk, he was obviously American or possible Canadian. What he told the doctors was that he and two friends had been at Coco-Bongo and at some point he suspected that someone had slipped a rape drug into his drink. The doctor asked him how that would explain the paint in his lungs. He went ballistic. Accused the doctor of making things up, started demanding that he be air ambulanced home to the States, and calling everyone in the hospital morons, liars, etc. Police came in later and told him that they had found one of his friends who was dead on the pier, close to where thay had found him, but they could not find the third person. I've wondered a time or two, if they ever found the third young man, or how is other friend had died.

Uh, yeah, in the second part of the story. And Guerrero has long been plagued by narcoviolence.

The FIRST part, the bodies in the cave is clearly about Quintana Roo.

This is true. There is cartel activity and related violence all over the country.

But tourists are rarely targeted or affected (unless they are involved in it somehow, of course). This is true even of Guererro...and we would still travel there.

Only for about the last 25 years. Cancun and Merida have long been the transport hubs for cocaine transfers from South America to the US and Europe. Drug violence has been minimal relative to other areas.
