Bragging about airfare
I just have to tell SOMEONE who cares.... I just booked flights for NEXT MARCH, yes, I know, that's NEXT MARCH, 2011 -- for $338 R/T from Newark, NON-STOP flights at the actual TIMES I want them!! I can't believe it will EVER, EVER, be cheaper than that.
Two years ago I paid close to $600 pp. Along with the 40% off at Porto Playa Condos if you book now for any time in 2011 -- WHAT A DEAL!!! So happy, what a day ![]() ![]() ![]()

Debbiec~where did you find that rate on Porto Playa? I looked at their website and don't see anything that good.....was it a package deal? If not, help me out here, we are planning on two weeks in June/July 2011. Thanks in advance!

Playa del Carmen Hotels - Condo Hotels in Playa del Carmen, Mexico - not to be confused with the All-inclusive called Porto Playa.
I see the promotion is off the website today, but it stated it was effective until 8/15. I will PM you with the "super secret" promotion code -- choose a unit, check out the price, and then try the code! |

I always pay about $400 for non stop CO out of EWR. Sometimes a little more, especially if it's last minute. But $400-ish is the norm these days for CO out of EWR. I already bought my March tickets too.
Does that $338 include taxes? Because I don't see anything in March for $338 total, taxes in. |

No, it didn't.... a little over $400 with all the fees, taxes, etc. Sorry if I was misleading there.
I've never gotten non-stops at good times of day for so little -- you must be better at scoping it out than I am! And look at all 3 of us Jersey posters in a row!!! We rock! |

![]() The lowest fares you'll see right now are $304 plus tax, which comes to about $402 with tax. That's what I've been grabbing. But I have seen it, on rare occasions, drop to $298 plus tax. $298, $304 - no real difference there. But the $304 fares are pretty easy to find right now, even for high season. |

Fantastic! Wish I could find fares like that for early December, when I'm hoping to go next. (But I lucked out like crazy this past spring, and got round-trip tickets for $198 in April!! At that price, I couldn't afford not to go!)

*Wish I could find a deal like that again! Waiting to book for large group for upcoming (slowly...) May trip. Actually, while I have you, Shammy, can you offer any advice regarding the 'large group discount' I've seen? We have 12 people flying into Cancun out of Boston and I've talked with a rep to see what it entails...and it actually seemed that it would cost us MORE booking with the "discount" than if we just booked it normally (one airline required a $50 "hold" that wouldn't count toward tickets). Should we even bother with that at all? |

However.... 12 tickets really isn't a "large group", it's not even considered enough for just a group according to a tour operator. Situation is, there are only so many seats available at the lowest fare you see when you price the trip. You don't know how many tickets you'll be able to buy at that price before the class of service changes and the fare goes up. For example, you might get 4 tickets at $400, 4 tickets at $450 and 4 tickets at $500. You might get 6 and 6. You won't know until you buy the first set of seats (because you can't by 12 at once online) and then go back to purchase the next round. Sometimes the fare increase is a little, sometimes it's a lot. You might pull a certain number of seats, pay for them, get your confirmation number and then go back to find out the remaining seats have gone up and are now too expensive. But you already bought the first group of seats so now what? Oops! ![]() When an airline is willing to book you as a "group", they do so at the same fare, so no one is paying more or less than someone else. But it's not going to be at the lowest fare available online. They're going to locate a class of service on the plane that has 12 available seats and whatever that fare is, that's what all 12 people will pay. This fare will be more than the fare you see online when you price on the airline's web site, but at least you know exactly where all 12 people stand, exactly what they will pay, no surprises. They usually have lenient rules about name changes too, or not needing names right away. Airline's differ but that's typically a perk of a group booking as well. So up to you how you want to proceed - chance a price fluctuation for some people or go with the set price. |
