They took us in a boat (obviously ) out past all of the AI's to the south to a little cove. I think it was behind Xcaret. It was neat to me!

We also walked down the north end of the beach, past the pier at constituyentes and past the royal porto real, and I think even past Shangri La and Las Palapas, to a section of beach that had some boats parked, and we just went out with ourselves and no guide. We had life jackets and snorkels and fins of course, and I have to admit that it was quite a swim out to the reef, but really not too bad. The only thing I worried about doing that was if a boat came by it may not see us and then that would not turn out well I am sure. But my parents stayed at Grand Porto Real and we just used the life jackets and snorkels they let you take, they did not care, I think the hotel even suggested it as a place that you can go snorkel on your own for super cheap (read... FREE!!)

I never have gone to Cozumel, so I don't have that to compare the snorkeling in Playa to.
