Nonsense! You can get package deals direct to Ixtapa on WestJet Vacations this winter, Saturdays...the Posada Real for a week January 8th, for example, is only about $1200 total. European plan, so you can explore both Ixtapa and Zihua to your heart's content!

Ah! I wasn't aware of that... I will check into it although we already have our vacation planned for next April back to Playa... I would love to explore this area of Mexico. Love Westjet for the flights too

Sounds great. Love that Coste Alegre area....just gorgeous. I know we will get back there one day.

If you want a nice place to stay, check out Punta Serena or Boca de Iguanas or Coconuts by the Sea in Tenacatita bay.

(You can walk to the other end of the bay to the town of La Manzanilla from the two latter ones.)

Any of those three would be really nice for an anniversary. Such a gorgeous bay! I also have a recommendation for a nice place to stay in Barra, Casa de Marco.

Yes, WestJet is the best!

We might be going to Playa or Cozumel at xmas if we can get a good deal....want to go on a cheap dive trip somewhere with half decent diving, anyway.

Proof positive - a pic really is worth a thousand words. Great report Riss. Thanks for posting it. You got some really good photos showing the town as it is. (Don too )

Thanks for reading, Craig.

I found the pic of Carola's sign.

Oh-tay!

I forgot to mention after our dives we went with Kansas John and Pako to Los Braseros downtown because we all had a hankering for tacos al pastor.....we shared a bunch of those and also some nummy shrimp tacos and queso fundido con chorizo too. (We cajoled Pako into joining us, it was his 'tip' as our guide, and he shared some great diving stories of his time in Egypt with us!)

Really yummy. The restaurant is very similar to El Fogon in Playa.

A couple of days into our trip we were walking around downtown when we were suddenly accosted ....by our old friend Franco!

We had met Franco our very first trip to Zihua (wayyy back in around 2003 I think?) when we went to Las Gatas beach one day and ended up at the restaurant he manages there, Otilias. He is a Zihua fixture, a warm, friendly, all-around helluva guy.

We went there again our second trip a couple of times too and visited with him again (and even then he remembered us), and when he spotted us downtown that evening he remembered our NAMES, even...amazing! We assured him we would be out to Las Gatas one day that week.

Don fished Tuesday and had plans to go again Friday, Wednesday we dove in the morning, so it looked like Thursday was Las Gatas day. Sadly it was raining when we got up, but after breakfast and a couple hours walking around town souvenir shopping (I bought 2 bags of sea salt for 25 pesos each, and Fabuloso so I can get a whiff of Mexico anytime I want....

(this is why Don is not the photographer out of the two of us )

Luckily around noon it had cleared up nicely, so we went back to the hotel, grabbed our beach stuff, and headed BACK downtown to the pier to catch the water taxi across the bay to the beach...35 pesos round trip each.

It was SO CROWDED....I knew there was a good reason we usually went early to this beach!

It's nice to pit in at one of the several palapa restuarants that line the beach here and just gaze across the bay at the mainland...

I got the biggest kick out of this future little surfer...

he was SO cute!

I am sure he wants to be one of these guys when he grows up...

Trudging all the way down to the end of the beach....

and lo and behold, hey, there is Franco!

We ordered some beers in a bucket...iced nicely

good customers get marlin ( yeah, marlin ) ceviche, on the house (I have to say, it was really tasty, although I have always heard marlin is not supposed to be good).

and a dorado and shrimp brochette sounded good for lunch...

and Franco and I (I am looking a bit manic)

We headed back about 5 or so. A good day.

That night we went to a restaurant called Tamales y Atoles 'Any'....for pozole!

It was good but what WAS that in there....tripe, I do believe! Very melt-in-your-mouth (I expected it to be rubbery) but I couldn't think about what I was eating.

Tomorrow, pics from La Ropa, more food pics, and some market photos... I have to get to bed.

night!

We have Dollar Stores...no Fabuloso that I have seen - but I will look for it.

I forgot to mention I went snorkeling for about an hour at Las Gatas (we took our own gear, just one set, and took turns).

It was suprisingly good snorkeling there. The water is really clear. I saw an octopus and tons of fish.

But I went out on the opposite side of the reef and caught caught in shallower water by the rocks and then got schmushed a bit by the surf break ....managed to get clear before I drowned luckily...serves me right for not wearing fins!

(It's an artificial reef made of huge boulders, legend has it that several hundred years ago an Aztec king made it so his daughter the princess could swim in calm waters).

Jeff, thanks for the pic .

Yes! We went last winter to Barra de Navidad for a week (spent the previous week at an AI in Tenacatita, right around the corner from Coconuts at Boca de Iguana)...gorgeous area.

Here is my trip report from that trip.

http://www.playa.info/playa-del-carm...eek-barra.html

We went over to check out that hotel and had lunch at the golf course....what a fancy place. Colmilla was neat.

Are there going to be fish in this report?

Kidding. Sorta. Nice Riss. This is one of Colleen's favorite places. I have never been there. I want to go now.
