double ick.yuck.sad. that food is terribly unhealthy, as if the Mexican people needed our bad food. I may have seen one in San Jose, Costa Rica as well..Don't mean to be a snob but those places really make me sick to my stomach and they have obviously caused the U.S. obesity problem to be out of control. again, they also take away from the smaller mom & pop businesses simply because they have a LARGE corporate following already.

hahaha. well, i guess my point being twofold:

1. how many Americans will grab a $5 or $6 burger because it is an American institution, instead of having a nice meal at any wonderful restaurant on 5th Avenue for $12 or $15 instead? a lot. it's a bargain and they recognize the name.

2. Other side of the coin: How many Americans will pay Extra for a Star*ucks instead of less at a mom & pop cool coffee shop? a lot. because they recognize the name.

I can certainly see the attractiveness for expats who don't have many American food choices in Mexico to want to have even the "option" to grab a burger at Burger King, but still......Im probably in the minority leaning towards the old idea of mom & pop businesses.

I happen to avoid places like Burger King and McDonald's because they are American/Canadian franchises and I prefer to eat more local food. For that reason I also didn't go to Starbuck or "JAVA JOE'S" for coffee. We have had Java Joe's in Canada for almost 20 years. NOT what I would consider a Mom & Pop Coffee Shop.

Java Joe's was not a franchise.

I've seen you negatively reference "Star*ucks" several times today. Truth is - I drink Starbucks coffee when I'm in Playa, and I LIKE Starbucks in Playa. For me, and I bet for some others too, it's not just because I recognize the name, as if I'm afraid to go to an establishment who's name I do not recognize. That's hardly the case.

I do frequent smaller mom and pop places, Cafe Corazon was one of my favorites before it closed. I go to Coffee Cafe, and Ah Cacao, and Cafe Sasta. FYI - I actually have paid more for coffee at some of these places than I have at Starbucks.

But I like Starbucks, yep, I do. I like the fact I get my coffee in a decent paper cup, with a decent top. Not always the case. I like that I can get Splenda there too, although not a deal breaker. But I like that it's there, it's sometimes difficult to find. I like the taste of their coffee, and the large/venti size is what I NEED. A lot of places don't have a to go coffee that large and those small, substandard paper cups just don't cut it for me.

And lastly, I like the fact that they open early and are usually located very close to where I typically stay, so if I want to take a walk, or hit the beach early (which I do), I can grab a cup of coffee and dash.

I for one was not upset when Starbucks came to Playa.

That may be, I was just saying that since up here it is (just like McDonald's is) I didn't go there.

But it's not!
You didn't go because you assumed it was the same?
It was not connected in any way.

Google 'Java Joe's'
See how many hits you get that are not connected to the Java Joe's in Canada.

That's correct, I didn't go there because I recognized the name. Sorry I don't walk around with my computer with me on my vacation.

Never seen or heard of Java Joe's here in Canada (we're so protected in the west not to mention obviously blinded by Tim Horton's and Starbucks!)

Never heard of this White Castle place in the US

Can't imagine why anyone would want to go to KFC in Playa when the Pollo asadero places are WAY better , and cheaper in Playa.

Really hate seeing more american franchises open up - but we don't have to go there, so we won't.

I think it's only upsetting to see American franchises to Americans. These are franchise names known internationally. A treat for locals, and tourists whom have heard of them or, just can't buy into local food.

My kids have eaten at McDonalds on 5th. I don't know why. But hey. Whatever yer into.
