We had a letter if necessary but at no time was she asked who she was traveling with when she checked in at airport(Northwest) or through customs at either end. Depends on who you get in customs I guess. We brought my 17 year old niece with us last week and we were asked for the notarized letter allowing her to leave the country/enter Mexico with us. Thank god we had it.
Get the notarized letter, especially if you are by yourself. They will likely ask for all proper documentations
