Question The Case of the Green Pen

Except for the ambulance attendants, Sheriff Monahan,a nd Dr. Haledjian, there as nobody at the Meadowbrook Bowling Lanes, the only alleys in town, except a young woman sprawled by the front door with a knife in her back.

"The lanes closed at midnight," said the sheriff. "One of my men discovered the body at 4:00 a.m., and I called you right away."

"Dead about an hour," said Haledjian. "Who was she?"

"Roberta Yale," replied the sheriff. "She just married Theodore Layne, a merchant captain, before he sailed for Hawaii last week. They have a little house on Bleaker Street."

"Any suspects?"

"Charlie Barnett - maybe. Roberta jilted him for Ted."

Haledjian dropped a green fountain pen by the door "Let's pay Mr. Barnett a visit."

The suspect lived in a room behind the gasoline station he owned.

Haledjian's first words were, "Do you know Roberta as been murdered"

"No!" gasped Barnett.

"Well, that's enough for now," said Haledjian.

Then, as if in afterthought, he added, "I must have dropped my fountain pen by the front door of the lanes where we found the body. I'm due in the city in an hour. Mind getting the pen for me, and leaving it with the sheriff this morning?"

Barnett looked uncertain. He shrugged. "Sure."

When he brought the pen to the sheriff's office later that morning he was promptly arrested.

EDIT: You may have noticed this thread was closed as soon as it was entered. That was not intended to limit your input or enjoyment in any way. On the contrary, your participation is most welcome. The action was taken to prevent eager Peeps from going into some search engine, finding the answer, and posting it, as happened on several occasions in the past. (Of course I harvest a lot of this material from other sources. You didnít think I create it all myself, did you? Iím good, but Iím not that good!) Regrettably, that also means that folks who legitimately work out their own answers, and would like to post them, donít get to display their prowess, but Iím afraid that canít be helped. Iíll open the thread in a couple of days, when Peeps have had an opportunity to try their hand at a solution, and you can post away then. The official answer will come a bit after that. I appreciate your patience and understanding, and hope you enjoy the exercise.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a pristine, well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally used up and worn out, shouting "Holy Shit...what a ride!!"

Lanes=Laynes!!! Only the killer would know to go to the lanes not the Laynes to fetch the pen.

The Official Answer

Although Barnett claimed he did not know Roberta Layne had just been murdered, he knew, as Haledjian said, that the pen lay "by the front door of the lanes." Had he been innocent, he would have looked for the pen at the front door of the Laynes - that is, at their house.
