Beachreader, the reason why you got searched for liquids only before entering your plane is that it is ALLOWED to take water bottles to other destinations than the US. I saw it while being on the airport in Cancun 3 weeks ago that the people flying to Florida from our gate before our flight were all searched while we (had a flight to Mexico city) were not searched at all at the gate...
Can confirm that there was no handsearch of the luggage before check-in which surprised me a little bit too as our luggage had been hand-searched on the flight Mexico City-Cancun on our way down.
