Thanks for the information Russell! Sammy had requested testing strips in another post and I spoke to my mom (she's diabetic) and she just re-filled her prescription and has 2 containers of strips she is going to give me to take down. I don't know how many strips are in each container... maybe 30?? I went to Costco and they are pretty pricey!! But I will look into whatever I can bring down next month!

Thanks Lucy. These strips aren't cheap, it's a shame the manufacturers can no longer donate them.

thanks, lucy and all you strippers
the plan is to test up to 30,000 people who are at risk this mission
the number will probably be determined by how many strips we can put together

i am told that diabetes is the number one killer in q roo, so this is a really big deal
thanks again for your support

My test strips are the One Touch Ultra

Let me know if they will work

What scale is blood glucose measure in in Mexico, mmol's for ml's?

If the answer is ml's, I may be able to get some of the testers from Uno's wife.

I have a box of 100 One-touch Ultra to bring, and some aspirin. Come on all you early-November visitors and help AN help the locals get tested and educated for diabetes! I am so glad Heather's mama has a mule for her donation!!

This is a great idea, but it would be helpful to know if they can use any kind of test strips?

For example the box of 100 One Touch Ultra at Walgreens is 120.00 but the house brand is 70.00, that's a bigggggg difference.I'm just trying to see if there might be a way to get more bang for our buck.

I just now found the Walmart brand Relion for 40.00 for 100. Yes you would have to buy a 9.00 meter too but that blows the One Touch away.

I sure would appreciate any specifics so I can look for this be fore my next trip.

I'll ask the woman who coordinates the diabetes mission to look at this thread and give some input.
Great feedback...

Here is a message I received from Dorothy on Facebook :

"All of the machines on the market are reliable and accurate. The biggest difference is in how big a blood sample is needed for testing (Freestyle lite advertises the smallest drop) and cost. As your readers have noticed, costs vary widely. The WalMart Reli-on brand is tested and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for accuracy.

We do not have any of those meters in our office, and because they are a store brand they are not sampled. It makes obvious sence to get these strips when the cost is 1/3 that of the name brands. For every thousand strips we should have 2 machines - one to use, one for a backup.

You are right that the number of people we can test will depend on the number of strips we have. There is apparently the opportunity to test up to 30,000 people, which will require a big surge of donations in the next 10 days. All those who are tested and found to have diabetes will recieve some basic education on managing diabetes and will be referred for more education and management.

You are right that diabetes is now the number one cause of death in Q. Roo. It is potentially a very devastating disease. It is compicated and costly, but is totally controllable, and for many is preventable! Our mission is directed at prevention, early detection and aggressive education. We are grateful for all the support coming our way as we plan our mission."

I've got a brand-new in the box Accu-Chek Aviva diabetes monitoring kit. It has 50 testing strips, but they've expired. They may very well work - will bring them along. I'm muling more stuff for the shelter so will put it with my things.

I'm glad someone can use this - I got it for my diabetic cat in 2008, but he never got a chance to use it.

Well unfortunately, we don't arrive until the 19th. So Russell will have the AN supplies that night when we go to Carboncitos for dinner. It is probably after you do all the testing, but I'm bringing 4 vials of test strips (25 in each vial) not sure if they are full or not, I will ask her to see if she knows. She also gave me a box of lancets (sp?) and a box of alcohol wipes (100)... that I know is not a full box. I also found the alcohol wipes at Sam's Club yesterday so I got a pack (2 boxes of 100). I asked her if her neighbor had any more baby clothes. Last year I took some and split it between AN and Axumal Library. So far I have 5 bottles of aspirin, but noticed they were not the chewables . Will make sure the other ones I buy will be chewable.

I saw that Walgreens is having a sale on hearing aid batteries, buy 1 pack at 7.99 get one free! Does anyone know what size batteries I should buy?

Here's a photo of donations we recently delivered.
When you drop off your donations at Angel Notion or Hotel Cielo, I'd love to see you take photos and share them on this thread.

from what i understand, if the expiration is less than one year, we can use things
more than one year after expiration date, it has to be thrown away

this applies to medications, and maybe other things as well??
anybody??

i am at home, there is no one to ask here
