After reading so many negative things about renting cars, and there seems to be many many, including the tour books, I just couldn't bear to pay 3 or 4 xtra days just for insurance. We opted to take public transportation, I have read more positive things about public transportation. I also read that in PDC it is easier not to have a car. Was this a wise decision? 2 more days WOOHOO!!!

We just rented through Alamo in Cancun. We had coverage through our VISA, but it is mandatory to take the $5 a day LDW, if you don't take the CDW. That's it-just take the LDW. We also took digital pics of the car in case there were problems-there were none- it was as easy as here at home. Renting was well worth it.

Pam-
We rented three times: two very good experiences, and once not quite as pleasant. Last time, we decided not to rent. For you, I think the key determinant should be how much you plan to "move around" the peninsula. Rent if you want to stay on the go, routinely seeing Mayan ruins, etc. Note that you could have plenty of fun right in Playa, and the car could sit more than you think! Don't stress over this...it'll work out fine. Weave |

"Mandatory" CDW coverage with Thrifty Cancun?
Hello, I recently rented a car from Thrifty in Cancun. I have a platinum mastercard that I was told would cover all rental insurance, damages, etc. whether I was in Cancun or in the States as long as I rented from a "mainstream" dealer (i.e., not Joe's Car Agency). However, when I went to pick up the car from Thrifty at the airport, the woman told me that insurance was "different" in Mexico and that my card only covered me in the US. I told her no no no, blah blah blah, even told her to call the credit card company herself or that I would call for me, but they wouldn't budge. I even had a Mexican friend with me and I speak relatively fluent Spanish.
So, at the end of it all I had to put a 2 thousand dollar hold on my Mastercard because I declined their coverage (which, I should mention, they haven't released the hold yet and it has been 3 days since I returned the car). I would not recommend Thrifty for these reasons, but wondered if anyone else has had similar experiences. How do I MAKE them understand that I am completely covered?? Thank you. |
