Man attacks shark!
Every year a group of 10-15 bull sharks come into Playa from Nov to March.
It's an exciting time for the dive centres as they lay dives on for people to go and sit on the ocean floor and watch these magnificent creatures. I was lucky enough to dive with them last Thursday, sat in a group we watched as they sailed around us just out of reach. They come back year after year and some of them are recognisable from their scars or hooks that are embedded in their mouths, a couple of them large, possibly pregnant, females. Last Saturday a fisherman and restraunt owner from Puerto Morelos sailed down and killed nine of the group. There have been a couple of dives since, but there's have been no more sightings. Wether you are a shark fan or not, you only have to be a fan of nature to realise this act of greed and violence on these creatures is abhorrent. Por Esto! | Yucatán

shark
PDC was a shark fishing village for decades but overfishing resulted in massive population drop in 60s and 70s ... let me guess that these bull sharks were spotted off Coco Beach like 100 yards or more hanging around an algae bed ....

I know nothing about bull sharks. Are they ever aggressive? We were going to try a little snorkeling off coco beach next month. (With life jackets and flotation markers) I was really only concerned about the boat traffic.....but NOW......!!!!!!

I looked them up. I may never go in the water again.
Not really, but I just assumed they were harmless. Is it nurse sharks that are pretty docile? I saw a diver's video of bull sharks when we were in Cozumel in January and he said they had gone over to Playa to do it. So this must be the same area. I'm not snorkeling off coco beach. I will stick to Akumal. Please don't tell me anything lurks in there.

Some actually consider bull sharks to be among the most dangerous sharks. There is a local dive shop owner that took groups bull shark feeding. I saw him after one of the bull sharks actually bite him on his hand. Guess he looked like food to the shark .

Not so
It would be nice to know if the boat captain involved earns any part of his income from the tourists, because the only way to effect animals such as this is through the wallet. Simply disgusting actions.

Bull sharks are agressive IF THERE ARE IDIOTS THAT FEED THEM. They get used to seeing men as a source of food.
SHARKS DO NOT NEED IDIOT DIVERS TTO FEED THEM, THEY KNOW PRETTY WELLL HOW TO FEED THEMSELVES. This is the sad result of man wanting to make more money by FEEDING sharks ( and attracting them dangerously close to men). Sharks are beautiful animals at the top of the food chain. Such a shame that people think they need us to feed themselves. ![]() ![]() |
