What are some cost efficient things to do in Playa del Carmen?
My fiance and I are going to The Royal in Playa del Carmen in February for our honeymoon. We want to have some fun, but would like to not spend all of our money.

If you want inexpensive...DON'T go to the excursions counter inside of the Royal.
Our cheapest day trip? Tulum! ADO to Tulum pueblo, taxi to a beach club (Ziggy's, El Paraiso) ADO back. And depending on what you consider affordable, the Catamaya catamaran is fun. For about $160 the two of you can spend most of your day sailing && snorkeling with a great lunch (lobster or steak) and open bar included. |

low $$
I agree with snorkle off Akumal Bay, The Akumal Caribe has a nice dive shop where you can rent all the gear as well as an area to leave your stuff. Also a nice restaurant Lol Ha is right there for a bevie after the salty snorkle. If you are there early you can also go to the very North of the Akumal Road and try out Yal Kool Lagoon.
There is an entrance fee at YalKool and Snorkle Gear to Rent, but its a nice easy snorkle as long as you arrive in the morning its usually not to busy and there are nice things to see. On your way back to Playa head to Puerto Adventuras where you can wander and watch the dolphins or view the Manatees as well as many shops along the Marina Boardwalk. I also love the Cenote's, there are many. Walking is free and there are many areas to just wander in Playa, the beach is always entertaining and people wander/walk/jog by all day long as well as the signage flown by every now and again. I am not sure about now, but when we have been to Wicky's in the afternoons past they had great live music on the beach in the afternoons, we sat and enjoyed a snack and a visit with the kids while enjoying the fabulous location and music. Walking through the Chedrauli and Mega ( 2 large mega stores ) or Centro Maya Shopping Centre's also interesting to have a look at what things cost when you get off the Tourist Zone. Purchase your cooler, ice and cerveza here for your trip to Akumal or water, pop and a snack. If you are uncomfortable with the Collectivo on your first trip head South on 5th until you come to the ADO Station, there you can purchase days in advance or for the next few minutes bus tickets to anywhere in the Riviera Maya for a very reasonable price. ADO or ther other buses at the 5th Ave Station are very frequent and fun to try, it takes the frustration of taxi bantering right out of the equation. Enjoy this beautiful area, we all love it. |
