How about cancelling the reservations at RPDC and renting a nice 4-bedroom house in Playacar or a 4-bedroom condo (I've seen a few big condos on VRBO, etc.) You could hire a cook a few nights for meals.

You would have maid service everyday and could have all your groceries arranged and delivered by the management company. Plus, there are lots of great restaurants in Playa. Just my two cents.....

You can't cancel an AI reservation, especially at this late date, and for a holiday reservation, without major penalties.

We have done the condo thing (though not in PDC) as a family before and enjoyed it. Though one of my main concerns was that I wanted Madie (the 16 year old girl) to have some freedom. At an AI she can wander to the gym, coffee shop, pool, yoga class, spa, etc. on her own and there's no way I'd let her wander around PDC on her own. I know it's safe, but it's just something I wouldn't feel comfortable with.
let me tell you what the skinny 18 year old boy ate today

Breakfast:
- large grapefruit
- 3 yoghurts
- 6 texas toast size piece of french toast with maple syrup
- 6 sausages
- 4 - 6 mandarin oranges
- coffee + oranage juice

Lunch:
- 4 grilled cheddar & Harvarti sandwiches
- 3 glasses of milk
- 1/2 bag of nacho chips
- 2 apples

Snack:
- 2 bowls of leftover chili
- the rest of the mandarin oranges (I think 6 of them)

Dinner:
-Two full racks of baby back ribs
- baked beans
-cole slaw
- 3 (yes 3) pieces of cheesecake
- 2 glasses of mil

- he also went through about 6 bottles of gatorade after playing hockey!
get where I'm coming from - that's one boy one day !!!
I really don't want to spend my whole vacation ordering food or shopping!

Well the announcement has been made ..... drum roll please ..................

Granny and her boyfriend are both selling their homes, buying one together and moving in together! That's right living in SIN

They're really, really happy and seems so at peace with their decision.

Good for them! happy is a great thing

I agree, ask them what they are thinking they want to do about the vacation situation and go from there.

Personally (not that you asked me, but )- I would let the happy couple share a room, make him pay for his own way- and I like the 'we are taking you to a luxury hotel in Mexico for a lovely family vacation, so if you have to share a room, you will suck it up and do with smiles on your faces' approach.

Oh -and the ex took the daughter to Italy and Bermuda and their dad did not KNOW? Biggie trouble, little China!

I was going to suggest a condo as well (the route we always go when traveling to Playa with family), but after reading that "menu" I would agree with your statement here, Jilly! Talk about getting your $$$ worth at an AI!

Hey, maybe you let the 18 year old bottomless pit stay at the Royal...and the rest of the family can get a condo nearby!

16 more business days till we leave and still no passport

I wish were one of those really laid back people who wouldn't dwell upon such an issue but to give you an idea how control freakish I am (hey the first step is admitting you have a problem) - see how much stuff I already have because of reading this site!

Money: It's an all inclusive, but I choose to tip, plus we have some stuff to pay for off site during some excursions with Edadventures. I know, I know, I'm in Mexico I should use pesos, but I have the American $ from trips to the States so I can use it in some instances.

Bubba Kegs I also know the controversy surrounding these bad boys, but I've done all inclusive before, and hate the dinky plastic cups, plus I think they're bad for the environment! Yes, I have straws, cause I like drinking fruity girly drinks through straws, I figure the environmentaly aware bubba kegs, balance the carbon footprint I'll leave with the straws!

Pool Floats So we don't have to play the get a float early game. These babies were $5 at a liquidation store, they're going in the kid's stockings (and luggage). We have two swimup rooms so they'll be easy to take in and out.

Suntan Lotion Acutally I have lots more and need to pick up a biodegradable one, which is only available at limited stores in Toronto. We have a history of skin cancer in my family and with the lack of shade at RPDC, we'll need this

Kobo Canadian equivilant of the Kindle

Ipod Loaded with lots of vacation/mexican/spanish music to play in the bose sound system that we have in our rooom

Neoprene Bag for Water To keep it cold

Imodium & Tums For tummy issues

I also have water shoes, since I hear the beach at RPDC is a bit rocky in places, though I'm having a heck of time finding water shoes is size 14 for hubby and stepson!

We've been discussing plan B as to what happens with Madie if her passport doesn't get hear on time

Ah well, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger or something like that!

You know that the Royal has Ipods you can check out along with a fairly decent selection of DVDs...just in case you want different music and find yourself needing something to do one day!

P.S. You really don't need water shoes. I'd skip them for sure!

Shammy is right, you don't need the shoes.

I always take a can huggie so that I can keep my beer cool. I hate warm beer and I walk around all week long with my little huggie, all happy and looking rather foolish b/c no one else has one! But it's better than having to drink warm beer! LOL!

My doctor told me to take Pepto Bismal every day while there to avoid tummy problems. Apparently, the bismal stuff wards off the germs. I tried it for 3 or 4 days and hated the taste with a passion and decided an intestinal problem couldn't be any worse than the pepto. I've never had any problems in the 9 trips to Cancun/PDC since. If you're concerned, you might want to try Pepto, I just hate wintergreen flavor!

taking pepto bismol daily as a 'precaution' may have the very UNdesirable side effect of constipation...just sayin' ....learned that lesson the hard way, when a GF of mine was bloated up and VERY uncomfortable during almost our whole week in Ixtapa once- and the pepto tabs she was popping every morning were the culprit!
