I am so sorry for your loss. What a shock for all of you. Take comfort in the arms of your family. And know that there are so many wonderful people who have you in their thoughts.
As for the nasty apt. manager - they don't really care. It's all about the dollar. You may want to check your states landlord/tenant laws and find out if his keeping the deposit and charging you for the whole month is legal.
