Dzul-Ha is great for snorkeling, better than Chankanab. However, Chankanab is a beautiful spot and without all the cruise ship idiots it should be very nice. Sorry about the idiot remark but cruise ships are floating trash cans and that is the reason why there is so much trash on beaches that don't get cleaned. 9 years ago there was a lot less trash and there where a lot less cruise ships around. That pretty much proves it to me!!!! And besides the trash, they sometimes run into a reef and tend to leak oil. And please just look at the people that come of cruise ships. I sure would not want to be surrounded by that every day.

Hey! I like to cruise also but I also like to travel to MX twice a year on my own. And I am really not that strange. If I could just get rid of this eye in the middle of my forehead....LOL. Really, you have been most helpful in the planning of our upcoming trip. Thanks again. _________________ Barb <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: Towonda on 2002-03-07 18:21 ]</font> |

Thanks to all for all the great info.. I will be at MP 4/20-27. Hope that all of you who are going will continue to post on your return. Are taxis readily available at the hotel? How $$ to PDC? Is there info on public transportaion at the hotel, or could someone explain the bus situation? Would like to know if you recommend renting a car?We will be a party of eight- most of us seasoned travelers who appreciate the tranquility that comes with inconvience. We do have one couple that is more accustomed to " Vegas" style resorts and this is their first venture to the Mexican coast. Hope they are not going to be miserable with these accomodations. I can't wait.

Linda,
In reference to the timeshare salespeople hounding the guests: Do you happen to know what they were offering if you sat through hell with them for a few hours? We made the mistake of getting trapped into one while in Puerto Vallarta but what they gave us for sitting through it ended up to be well worth it (believe it or not)! Thanks again for all the info you have posted. You and Katrina should go into business together! <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: shamalama on 2002-03-08 16:33 ]</font> |

Hello everybody!!!
Thanks a lot for all your comments, they've all been of grat help!!! My boyfriend and I will be at the MP this Friday (March 15th). We can spend the whole week in a "palapa" and sleep in an "hamaca", but we just can't start the day without a hot, strong, black coffee!!! Is there a coffee maker in the rooms?? Thank you very much!!! |

Yeah, I know there is a coffee maker in the one-bedroom suite. You have to supply your own coffee though. Can somebody that stayed in a hotel unit comment on whether or not there was a coffee maker in their room?

that's good enough for us!!! we're staying in an one-bedroom suite. I'm sure we'll find extraordinary coffee since Chiapas and Veracruz (two other states from the southeast part of Mexico) are very important coffee grain producers.

I just got back from the Mayan Palace on Saturday. We were there for a week & stayed in hotel units. There were no coffee makers in the hotel unit. If there are more than 4 people in your group (like us with 7), then you will have a hard time finding a cab. You will end up in 2 cabs. Occasionally, you could find someone that would fit 5, but it was rare. It was about 150 pesos from Playa to the hotel. There was usually 1 or 2 cabs outside the lobby, so not much of a choice. I got lucky & my shuttle driver from the airport (Miguel) ended up being like our personal driver & drove all 7 of us all over (Cancun & Playa). It ended up being cheaper that way & we'd all be together.
My friends did the timeshare tour thing for the 15% discount (I couldn't go - not 30 for 2 years!), and one of them ended up buying one. He got a good deal my friends all said, so he's happy. The other two that went use their parents time shares, so they were just there for the discount. It took them all day, though, so beware! Anything else anyone want to know? Kristen |

I forgot to add, for those that were wondering...
The bus system (the Mayab) that will stop for you, we used going to & from Cancun & was about $3. Make sure you know what time the last bus leaves, because the first one leaves in the morning from the bus station at 5:45 a.m. (we took it after being at a club all night). It's an hour drive, though & COLD! The AC definitely works! Kristen |

We don't go until April 27th but I will post a report when we return. It is so helpful for people who are in need of information. Hey, we are leaving on the 20th for 8 days. Maybe see you at the beach-side bar sometime. I will definitely post a report, (hopefully with Pics) when we return. I am soooooo looking forward to this! Barb |

lil mama & Towanda,
We(Myself & wife) will be at MP from April 19 thru 26. May be we will see you there. I ordered and received can do maps. They are great. Lots of details. I also found a web site with FREE and reasonably detailed maps. The site is http://www.mexicotravelnet.com/maps/cancunmap.htm OOPS! THAT'S NOT THE SITE WITH GOOD MAPS. THE CORRECT SITE IS http://www.cancun-map.com/location.html WHICH HAS DETAILED MAPS OF CANCUN, PDC, TULUM, RIVIERA MAYA, ISLA MUJERES, COZUMAL, ETC. ETC. At present I don't plan to rent a car. I don't know how safe is to drive (safety from driving habits of other drivers and potential harassment from police. Are police really corrupt or is that something media has blown out of proportion?) <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: ajp on 2002-03-19 08:24 ]</font> |

I've just returned from the Mayan Palace and rented a car for my stay. I had no problems with police at all. The local taxi drivers drove as if rules didn't apply to them. I had several instances when they just shot out of nowhere!
If I was to stay at the Mayan Palace again, or anywhere outside the PDC/Cancun area, I would definitely rent a car again. I felt comfortable driving at night and the road was easily marked with nearly every hotel along the coast. I did NOT have a good experience with my original Thrifty rental. I ended up with a car from Budget for a decent price. Good luck! |

Welcome back Merk! How was everything? Did you get caught in any of the snowstorm coming home? We had one the day you left and then another on your return. This last one was the biggest snowfall of the year here in the TC area.
So how were things at the Palace? Did you enjoy your stay? How was the weather for you, better than our time there, I hope. Just thought I'd check in and let you know that I was thinking of you this week and keeping my fingers crossed for the weather Gods to smile down upon you during your trip. Welcome back Merk and Munichchick! _________________ Linda <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: Linda on 2002-03-18 19:07 ]</font> |
