It was some sort of mine....
...dunno what kind exactly but a couple of the openings are cut entirely through the hill to provide access to the area, and some are in fact caves...
(And of course we all know caves are created when someone carves out an area into a hill or stone...)
There's still some old equipment there but it's all private property now. No fencing though. I suppose for the landowner it's cheaper to carry some sort of blanket insurance than to build a fence around it. From what I heard - at one time it used to be quite the high-school party area.
Daughter Jessica has some pictures of the caves and cut-out walk-through areas, and of them playing around on the ice...
