Tuesday, December 14th (the home stretch)

I woke up before the sun this morning, only because my teeth were chattering. There was no hot water, either, so I took a short, brisk shower and woke Brian up with my feverish packing. I wanted to get outside (once I warmed up a little) and enjoy our last few hours in Mexico. It was certainly warmer than back home, anyway.

We went downstairs for a nice breakfast of chilaquiles and fruit. The owner’s son (I can’t remember his name) told us that it was so cold that Walmart had run out of blankets and people in town actually had to buy the Mexican ‘tourist blankets’ to keep warm.

A woman and her young daughter came and sat nearby and we talked with them a while, mostly about living in the U.S. (they lived in South Carolina but were originally from China) and about how they were looking to explore Mexico a while longer and find a nice place to stay during the holidays. A little later her mother joined them, and looking at the writing on the back of her jacket as she walked by “Go Veg Be Green Save the Planet” I had the feeling I recognized them from somewhere. It was only much later I realized they’d exhibited at the same green expo as us in Manhattan the year before, and must be in town for the big climate change conference at the Moon Palace. Small world, and I wish I’d realized who they were at the time.
We went back upstairs and I sat out on the little balcony watching the workers below while Brian finished getting ready.

We passed our bags back down the steep stairs and drove through town once more.

Lenny’s cousin?

We parked by the zocalo and walked around for one last time and then drove off to the airport, just before 10. Less than 20 minutes later we were dropping off the car and noted the mileage- 1295 km. (Remember we started at 21….)
We got dropped off at the terminal where a strong Mayan woman helped carry our bags. Our plane was 45 minutes late in arriving, and my nail file got confiscated by security. Other than that there’s not much more to tell.

Our only real regrets about this trip were that we didn’t get to stay longer, but also that we had to leave Ramses and Caramba for so long.
It was hard to unpack with these eyes looking up at you.

Well, there you have it- one of our best trips to Mexico yet. Sorry to ramble on so long and sorry to post so many darn pics (it was hard to weed them out!)….but, thanks for coming along on our little joyride. I have a feeling it won’t be our last.

I usually don't like to get in a boat with my husband either...
That's why I'm the captain.

i think we were the only people in town who didn't live there
we were followed everywhere we went
must be what it feels like to be a rock star

we ducked into a restaurant to get away from all the attention
had a nice lunch and left town
it was cold and windy and there was no way i was gonna get in a boat

I'd love to think I could inspire others to travel around. Much as we love Playa there is so much else to see out there..... we have not explored nearly enough yet.
And we <3 you too. Glad to call you a friend.

I think you'd like Mahahual, Jim. Hope to see you two next time, and hope Donna's sciatica gets better soon.

I actually wished you were posting more photos, cause I knew you had more! Really, never enough! I wish I came with you. No, not to Playa, but all the way with you every step of the way. What fun! But then, we'd probably not be friends anymore cause I would have driven you crazy before we even got to Valladolid, and you would have tossed me out on the side of a dusty road somewhere!
