Happy New Year Snappy.
Also FYI: We purchased two TelCels Amigo plan and noted they are for our family and we rec'd 2 phones for approx 24.00 and we rec'd 300 pesos credit on each phone, the plan the nice fellow at TelCel in Centro Maya also included free calls between our two phones and free texting between the two phones as well. I went to ensure our phones were registered prior to the new phone laws and they said yes they are, I was then away for up to 6 months. I returned to the Centro Maya TelCel Store and the phones were put in limbo as no use for over 3 months, but I followed the directions of the teller and put 200 pesos on each phone and went back to his seat ( where he waited for me until I had put pesos on the phones) he then re installed them and put the lost or expired pesos back onto the phones. I left with two perfectly great and useful phones. We have been using these phones now for 3 years, when family or friends head to the Playa area we ask that they take our phones and use them to keep in touch relatively inexpensively as we all have wandering teenagers or golfing hubbies to keep track of. It has been a really positive experience for us and the prices for calls to and from Mex/Canada are expensive even if Rogers is a partner to TelMex. Our phones are very plain with no bells or whistles, but they have the ability to either communicate in english or spanish. My sons is in spanish and mine is english. We love them. |

make sure you go and get your rate reduced when the sim cards are one year old for the first year, calls are over 4 pesos a minute after one year, if you go to the telcel service center in centro maya, your rate will go down to a little over a peso a minute they will not do this for you unless you go to the service center makes the phones a lot cheaper to run |

We also have a Telcel Amigo plan that we got last year. We have been adding minutes from home on www.prepaidwireless.com since we left last March. Every 60 days I put $10.00 US in phone credit about 120 pesos and it is good for the next 60 days. The previous phone that I had I didn't keep the credit current and the number was discontinued and reassigned after there was no activity on the phone for 9 months. And come Feb. 8 I will go over to Centro Maya to get my one year anniversary bonus of reduced rates for the calls that I make. Some things in Mexico work perfectly well, thanks.

PrePaid
JB ubie Thank you so much.
I am on the site right now for prepaid. If I prepay online this will keep my telcel amigo activated? I will not have to go in an reactivate....just want to confirm this. Is it 2 months or 3 months of inactivity til they are put into limbo? I was under the impression it was 3 months, but if its 2 months I will put $ on at the end of the month and I will be on when we arrive in March....sweet. You know I am constantly amazed at how much easier it is to be invested in Mexico. Each time I return there are new and exciting changes in most systems we have been dealing with for the past 10 yrs. So excellent. As always, this site is amazing because of people who are willing to share their personal experiences to help ease the way for others. Thank you ![]() ![]() ![]()

TelCel
Hi all.
I have been on hold with prepaidwireless for a bit. I am a Canadian so the prepaidwireless web won't allow me to make an account it is for US Citizens, but they do have a company where I can do this. They have a sister site called babblebug dot net where I am heading to now. Ok it looks so easy, you pick Mexico on the International Cellular Page, put your 52 then the 10 digit number and the amount you want to put on your phone. I will try this as soon as I hear back on the question regarding activity and putting payment means I keep active or not put in limbo...lol Kim |

i think if you put credit in your phone and use the phone before 180 days elapse all is well and you will get your credit back i don't think you really need to put in ten dollars, there are recharges for 30 pesos you can also use your phone while you are in the US, just text to someone, or call, it will use some credit, but it will ensure your phone is active i think i let one of my phones set for longer than six months, put some credit on it and it was fine i suspect the 300 days and you lose it is accurate as for going to telcel center in centro maya, it should not be too hard to tell them you have had your phone for over a year and want your rate reduced this results in a substantial saving on per minute charges they will not do this unless you ask no wonder that dude is the richest man in the world Last edited by snappysammy; 01-14-2011 at 04:38 PM.. |

Centro Maya TelCel is great, my Spanish is passable, but when I am nervous or unsure of what the correct terminology is I totally freeze up, the two nice tellers I have dealt with in the past year I spoke with had as passable english as I had spanish and it was easy. In and out in 20 minutes as I did not know the procedure.
My phones were put in limbo due to inactivity, I should have gone to the payment window (windows to the right with plexi glass) to purchase minutes and put in 200 pesos (or whatever you feel you want for your trip) on each phone or even less just to have credits on the phones. Then you wait in line for a teller (no plexiglass), let the teller know your phone was inactive due to being out of the country and he or she then reactivates your phone. The teller I had put all my old pesos that had been reclaimed back on the phone and then some as there was a promotion for Christmas going on at that time as well. Walked away feeling like I had won a lottery. I have not yet done the reactivation cuz I am going to try to text each phone to see if I have enough minutes to keep them going. If not I'll use the Babblebug, I signed up for an account and it was a piece of cake. Will do the *264 in March so I don't have to go to a Tel Cel centre and wow life is becoming so much less complicated. Love it. Happy New Years Everyone.

No not paying the original rate. I went to Centro Maya Telcel awhile back to go on a reduced rate plan. Have had a Telcel phone for 4 years. Also, everyone should register their phone with Telcel.
