$2500 Crack!

Here's a picture of a crack that could have cost me and my family dearly had I not been home!
It's on the back side of the fire box on my pellet stove.
I started the stove yesterday morning, went to the back of the house to work on another project (redoing a bathroom) when I smelled smoke. I ran into the room with the stove and smoke was streaming out along with sparks!! Quickly shut it down and inspected it...this is what I found!

I also found that a new stove cost me approx $2500!

A friend of mine had a similar thing happen in the flue of their wood stove...burnt half the house down this past Oct. $2500 is cheap when you compare to their loss! Thank God you found it so early!

They probably could (hell I have a welder and could probably do it myself). But, it looks to me that a weld on the other side is what weakened the wall in the first place. I would never trust it from this point on.

wow, glad to hear that you were home and that nothing else was damaged. That could have been tragic!

Wow!! Glad you caught it in time. We used to have a wood stove (same one for 25 years) when we lived in CT. It kept the house toasty warm but I found it to be such a chore and dirty. I'm glad to have just a gas fireplace now -- that's all we need in the midwest.
