I just saw this on the evening news. It's very disturbing to hear that kind of thing. So what do you think? Has any one in Playa heard anything about it?

It's the first I've heard about it.
I see no reason not to believe them.
His attempt at suicide to bring in the authorities was strange.
I guess they didn't steal all of their money since they were able to pay a fine.

The story didn't say where the rape kit was administered...did she go to the hospital ASAP after her release? That's where I would have made a B-line for.

I do have to say that I find some of the cops there real jerks who forget they are there to serve and protect..not to rip-off and abuse....but you can find those type of cops anywhere in the world.

I knew a guy who was in a Mexican prison for 2 years and was treated badly. His dad actually hired some goons to break him out. I couldn't believe how bad he looked when he got back to the US. That was back in the 70's. The last thing I want to do is get arrested in a foreign country.

So hard to say who to believe in this case
I'd always err on not judging anyone until all the facts are out.
I find certain parts of the story super bizarre however it doesn't make things any less true.
I had a fairly scary episode with a mexican security guard in Cancun years ago when he thought I was passed out on the grass in front of our room. I was just laying there totally sober waiting on my "roommates"
These type of stories pop up here in the US quite often too you just never know what really happened until the investigation is over.

That's kind of scary since I have always stopped & chatted with the police at their hut by Corazon. I've found them to be very friendly but nothing crossing any kind of line. Altho I did get an invite to a wedding of one of their cousins, of course I respectfully declined.
Makes me a little nervous to hear this type of "attack". Tho I have to say, I am never drunk & belligerent in the streets, tho that is no excuse to do something like this, if in fact it did happen,.

Hard to say just where the truth lies on this one. If true, it was a terrible ordeal. Some words of advice to travelers:

A little more ice, a little less liquor.

Rape Kit administered. Negative test result. Accused the police of using condoms.

Have absolutely no proof for this, but when I read this my BS meter was going off. If indeed true, I hope justice is served. If not, I hope justice is served to those claiming it happened.

....Coleman says he had a heated exchange with the officers when the police wanted to search him for drugs..."But I believe when dealing with a police officer that is overstepping his authority. I believe it is incumbent on me to point it out to them, even if it means I am going to have to deal with some charges afterwards."

Just one aside - Rule #1 when approached by the police in any country in the world: COOPERATE.

I tend to think people who make claims of rape or assault, are telling the truth....not many people would choose to willingly go through the crap that goes along with making the claim if it were NOT true. What would be the motivation?

Having owned bars in the U.S.: Alcohol causes your RULE #1 to go out the window. But only in 99% of the cases .

You're absolutely right - reasoning is the first to go out with intoxication. How silly of me to forget that, and offer advice go cooperate.

Really?

Getting drunk and belligerent in a public place should earn you a night in jail, not a night of rape and assault.

Sort of like thinking that you can drive your car home as home is only one mile away.
No problemo. RIGHT.
Ones' judgement becomes totally impaired with (tooo much) alcohol.
I will withhold my opinion on this story until more info comes out. But, I must say, it sounds a little fishy to me.
