Humility (adjectival form: humble) is the quality of being modest, reverential, even politely submissive, and never being arrogant, contemptuous, rude or even self-abasing!

No mention of Jamey in that definition! What's this about some trip I've proportedly agreed to! I don't even know where Greece and Italy are located in the United States?

Please advise.

Chapter 4 – Thursday – If you Drink, Don’t Drive, Do the Puerto Morelos Crawl

In order to get to the Little Mexican Cooking School on time, we actually had to set an alarm. It is pretty rare that we do that in Playa. Due to the previous evening’s rowdiness, we didn’t have time to go out for breakfast, so I enjoyed the hearty muffins and coffee at the Luna Blue. It is very nice to have that option as opposed to needing to go somewhere for breakfast.

TG’s status was on and off, but she finally decided to give it a shot. We caught a cab on the street and the fare was 280 pesos (before tip) to Puerto Morelos. Cheap. The school is not that easy to find, but fortunately Tony gave us some very to easy follow directions.

The cooking school appears to be some sort of converted duplex, with one side being the cooking school and the other side being where the owner lives. We were running late so Catriona greeted us and immediately showed TG to the non-school side where TG camped out in the bathroom. Cat could see that I was worried about leaving TG, so she told me she would take care of her. She also told me not to worry; it happens sometimes, “but normally to 17 year old boys”.

It was only 10:30AM when we left the house, so Ruso and I decided to hold off a bit on hitting the bars, and to take a long walk together on the beach.

This is the end of the main pier and 2 birds perched on stumps. I know you are very excited to see this pic.

Other views from the pier. I am well aware that most of you are not even looking at these pics.

We then took an hour long walk down the beach. Just 2 big guys, walking together on the beach.

Puerto Morelos has a LOT of weeds in the water. Apparently those weeds are good for fish. So, PM is a fishing town and not a beach town.

A long and thick piece of wood was lying on the beach. What else was I supposed to do with it?

We walked up to this cool looking (but private pier) before it started raining.

Pelican, “Don’t take my picture you Speedo freak.”

It started to rain, and we started to get thirsty, and there was a lack of beach bars, and there are too many ands in this sentence, so we turned our walk inland. We made our way back to the cooking school, and to my great relief, TG was feeling better and was engaged in the class. Cat gave us some food, some non-alcoholic girlie drink, and said we could watch for awhile. Seating setup at the class. TG is seated closest to the bathroom.

Chef Pablo and owner Cat in action

Cita, “Why do I have to sit next to the chick that smells like puke?”

Okay. Enough of that. I had never been to PM before, so I told Ruso that we were going to do a review of as many of PM’s bars as possible. I would tell every bar that we were professional bar reviewers “somos profesionales y estamos en un revision de bares.” We hit 7 bars. We loved them all for different reasons (good food, cold beer, cool servers, cool vibe). In general, the service was more prompt and friendly than in Playa. This is perhaps explained by PM being a much smaller town.

Walking from the cooking school toward the square, this is the first place we stumbled upon. It certainly didn’t look like a bar, but we were quite parched so we stopped in. If you look close, you can see Ruso’s asscrack.

This was a tiny little shack attached to the owner’s house. When we ordered beer, she went to her house to get it. When I asked to use the bathroom, she took me into her own personal bathroom. When I asked for 2 limes for my beer, she ran back to her own kitchen to get them. But, it was a quaint little place where we had a great time. 25 peso beers (overpriced given that she got them from her home’s fridge). In fact, we even had a 2nd beer there, and our goal was mainly to have 1 beer at each place so that we could hit many places. If we had 2 beers at a place, that was a good sign. Ruso having #2.

Thanks for the 2 limes!

Owner chick, “I will smile for this picture, provided that you two weirdo’s get the hell out of Puerto Morelos before the sun sets.”

A highlight was that a friend of the owners was just sitting in there picking the guitar. And he was awesome! Unlike Mike Grabow, this guy did not ask me to accompany him.

Our main goal on this trip was to find the Cantina Habanero, a bar that Sue recommended and which was owned by her friend Ed. We had been sitting in this bar for a few minutes and asked the bartender, “Donde esta el bar Cantina Habanero?”. She informed us we were sitting in the Cantina Habanero!

We asked for Ed, and he came out from the back. He was reserved until I said we were friends of Sue, when he opened up and talked to us for quite awhile, telling us about his life journey that ended up with him in PM. This bar sounds like a great evening hangout, with lots of live music. 25 peso beers at this bar, and they were the coldest beers in PM. I also really loved this place, because when we paid the bartender, she had to get someone else to open the till and give us change. Great internal controls (dorky accounting prof speaking here)!

Here is Ed with one of his bartenders. As mentioned in the opening of this thread, Ed passed away suddenly the following day. This could perhaps be the final picture ever taken of him. I was honored to spend some time with him before he passed. RIP.

That guy stole my overalls!

I can relate

Our next stop was the Cocteleria. 25 peso beers and 45 peso for a small order of quesadillas with hot salsa (Ruso refers to hot, as pero caliente). We spent much of our time chatting with server George of the Jungle. I think has some interest in the bar, but also leads tours off to the side. George, “I am going to point at the hairiest guy in this picture.”

Ruso, “I so wish I had JG’s fit-overs.”

George, “Surrrrrrre, your wives are at the cooking school. Surrrrrrrrre. Why are you guys eyeing me up so closely? I am getting the F out of here.”

We then went to a place called El Pesquero. They had funky music, and cold, 25 peso beers. They seemed somewhat impressed when I told them we were professional bar reviewers, so that gave us not only a big plate of chips and salsa, but also some fish soup for free.

Female bartender, “This dude loves pics so he can get uncomfortably close to me. I don’t blame him. I am pretty hot. But he is not. I dig the dude wearing fit-overs.”

This would be a cool place to come with kids given the sand and the play area in the back.

A view from afar.

We then went to a place called La Petita. It was a sand-floor restaurant (no bar seating), and we were the only gringos in the joint. All the seating is out back, and many tables were full of locals. 25 pesos beers (even though the menu said 20 pesos). They brought out this stuff for free; the stuff on the left is fish. Holy great tasting fish appetizer Batman!

We paid 80 pesos for a Grouper filet that was to die for. If you are ever in PM, go to this place for dinner!

We are looking happier as this is bar #5. I am also happy because the serious lady server loosened up when showing my how to operate the jukebox.

We then swung into El Faro. This appears to be a very nice restaurant with a very classy bar, but it was largely deserted when we were there. Beers were still only 25 pesos and there was free pool. My camera had run out of batteries so the owner even took our pics and emailed them to us. Great guy.

It was now about 3:15, so we returned to Cantina Habanero and grabbed a beer to go (they let us take the bottle!) for our walk to the cooking school, where they were dining on the day’s creations. We were promptly told to leave and to come back in an hour, so we hit bar #7, Cruzita.

This was one of these small, local restaurants off the beaten path. The server was wonderfully friendly, and for the first time, we got 20 peso beer. We had some sort of shrimp appetizer for 50 pesos.

JG, “I think Ruso likes it when I unbutton my shirt.”

We returned to the school and got a pic with the chef, the owner, and the hotties.

I suppose some of you want to know about the cooking school. Here is the review TG put on trip advisor:

I was greatly looking forward to my class at The Little Mexican Cooking School until, upon waking, I realized that my variety of mixed drinks the night before could seriously inhibit my ability and desire to eat. Needless to say, I arrived late and looking a bit green around the gills. Catriona Brown, owner, greeted me at the door offering aspirin and her own bathroom should I need it. It was quite gracious of her! I rested, drinking Gatorade until I was less green and finally joined the group as they were passing around a variety of chilies to be smelled (which I tentatively did) and even one to be shaken (parabelle?) to hear the sound of the seeds rattling inside. We were given a terrific education in the chilies of Mexico.

We witnessed the beautiful process of making salsas (my favorite was sikil p'ac, a pumpkin seed salsa) and guacamole using the traditional molcajete. This perhaps sold 8 or 9 of the 10 of us on seeking to purchase our own molcajete's as it was visually and kinesthetically pleasing to use this old style mortar and pestal.

The group was instructed in the making of tortillas, to be eaten with aforementioned salsas, and tamales, hand crafting our own which were then steamed while we witnessed the making of a ceviche Riviera Maya that made believers out of the squeamish on the eating of raw fish, a jicama and orange salad that was both sweet and crunchy, and a pepper crusted red snapper on a bed of one of the salsas that had been cooked in a clay pot on the range.

We tasted a variety of local beverages such as tequila, (I passed) a lovely rice and almond milk that cooled the heat of the deliciously spicy salsas, and a tea made from the petals of a jamaica flower, a relative of the hibiscus.

The lessons were charmingly delivered with a bit of banter between the group and Pablo, the current in house chef, and Catriona. I felt educated, but not overwhelmed, and very welcomed into this lovely kitchen. We finally dined on all of the items we'd seen or helped to prepare at the end of the day and left satisfied in spirit and in belly!

Even had I had to miss a day of sun on the beach (it happened to be rainy and cool) I would have thought this well worth my time and money.

Here are some pics that Cita took:

The girls bought some goodies at the school while I finished the school’s pitcher of Sangria. We then walked back toward the square to show the ladies the results of our research.

We hit the Cantina Habanero one more time with the ladies just so they could taste and properly appreciate the coldest beer in PM. After a couple rounds, we caught a cab home, and the cabbie wanted 350 pesos. I told him we had paid 300 pesos after tip to get to Playa, and he was good with that.

We chilled out at the Blue for an hour before heading out for the night. If you can name this towel animal, I will buy you a beer.

We made our way down to Bad Boys, getting there around 7:30. We proceeded to drink them first out of Tecate Light, then Sol, then another beer, until we finally settled in on Dos Equis. There was awesome music, of course, and it was jam packed! Although, as usual, it cleared out a bit in the 4th set, as it was getting to be bedtime for many of the attendees.

I think I gashed my chin shaving, so I better numb it with tequila

Once it hits the lips, it’s so good…

Nice work with no lime Ruso!

Packed dance floor. You can see JJ in the background. I love JJ. JJ thinks I am weird.

Ruso and Cita, “JG, it is so great of you to bring us to a bar where the average patron is collecting social security.”

Smiles all around. I think someone passed gas. Ruso probably got blamed. The big guy always gets blamed.

TG and my frequent dance partner Bee (no idea how she spells her nickname). Bee, “TG, if you puke on me, I am going to return the favor.

Transit, “Feel free to take like a hundred pics JG, I’ve got a hot chick by my side. I also have a beer coozie because I am kind of a weenie and don’t drink beers fast enough to keep them cold.”

Robinandmark (center). As Robin pointed out earlier on this thread, Mark did not believe that I was a college accounting and finance prof, so I proved it to him by doing t-accounts in the sand.

They call us the Rabbits. How soon until we are back at the Blue?

TG, random chick, JudyBlueEyes, and JJ’s Kim. Kim, “JG, I know you think I am hot. Is this a hot look? No? Well, then quit taking pics of me you pervert.”

I had developed a blister on my foot the day before, so I wore flip-flops all day today. That worked out fine until a sidewalk jumped up and stubbed my toe as we were leaving Bad Boys.

We apparently stopped in the big souvenir store on 5th and Juarez. Ruso, “Does the combo of Dos Equis and this hat make me look Mexican?”

We have had some fun hanging out with manager Adrian at Carlos and Charlie’s in the past. So, even though it is a tourist trap, we stop by once per trip. He was not working, but we were starving, so we stopped in for a drink and some eats. I think these pina coladas are like 140 pesos. Damn tourist trap.

TG had some Chicken Modo Mio, and she said it was absolutely awesome. I have no idea what Modo Mio means.

Although Adrian wasn’t there, our favorite bartender Miguel was there and had no problem posing for pics with the hotties.

A big tour group had left Carlos and Charlie’s right before we arrived, so it was dead and very boring while we were there. That was okay with us; we were wrapping up a very long day. Around this time, I developed a massive case of hiccups so I started guzzling water. We cabbed home (20 pesos) due to my injured toe, and the hiccups had still not left me. Thus, I purposefully and viciously deposited all of the contents of my stomach into the toilet, yelling in victory between bouts. TG was not impressed.

Waaaalaaaa, my hiccups were gone, and I slept like a baby. But the vomiting put a damper on any BCWW, for the 2nd day in a row.

This was probably my favorite day on our trip. Despite hitting 10 bars, however, it was not our most rowdy. That comes tomorrow.
