I know you'd totally enjoy it and it would probably take us forever to make the crossing.

Jimmy

I would love to make the drive with and you are right, it might take us a month.

I didn't stay in Escarcega, just had dinner and fueled up, but for what I saw, there are more lodging optons and in better conditions than when Michael Holmes stayed there many years ago.

I stayed at Zho Laguna (10km North of Xpujil) ), at a little cabaņa that costs 170 pesos a night and I don't think dogs or cats would be forbidden.

Mhh, I need to re-post another reason to drive during the day in the area, hehee

Any chance that anyone would go pick up that sweet dog & let him live the good life?

Wish I could do a full trip report for each drive but they take way too much time. On my next drive in November/December, I'll have HD video cams mounted front and back and possibly one aimed out the driver side window for those occasions when I'm being shaken down by the police. Don't feel gutsy at all making the drive and my Spanish is marginal but gets me by when I need it.

Quite honestly, I think that pooch and his sister/friend/girlfriend is living the dream. Luckily they live in a friendly community and judging from their healthy condition, the locals appear to be coming through for them.

Great trip report, I couldn't beleive the oysters, a plate like that would probaly be 40 to $60 dollars at a restaurant here.

The oysters harvested near Alvarado are exceptionally tasty and fresh. I personally prefer the smaller ones for taste and being able to get more than eighteen for less than $2 US is an unbelievable deal. Hopefully, few tourists will ever be lucky enough to visit this seafood mecca and ruin the pricing structure. My next visit there will be November 2011... this time around I'd like to sample some crab.

I'm in a Mexican grocery store the other day and the guy in the checkout line ahead of me has a family pack of Gansitos. So, vaguely remembering your post, I buy some just like his. Of course, they happen to be the chocolate ones...

Tell me a little bit more about the originals, so I can bulk up on my next road trip.

as a chocoholic i was really happy to see the new gansitos with chocolate cake
but truth is i like the original yellow cake ones better
just something about the whole gestalt

i have to use a lot of restraint not to finish a box in two or three days, but i am getting better
and of course down here you must refrigerate unless you live in an air conditioned place, which i will not do

now i am really sorry i did not pick up a box at sam's yesterday

I haven't had those in many many years (I didn't know about the chocolate ones, for example)

The originals should be this:

normal cake dough

and the new ones specify that they are chocolate ones, with a darker envelope

I do recommend eating them cold or frozen,

October 2011
For those of you who were concerned, our furry friend from Sota la Marina is still hanging out at the Pemex north of town. Seems to be doing just fine on his own. We again helped him out with some healthy snacks... borrowed from Tasha & Chuey.
