Walkie Talkies at Big Resorts

We will be staying at the Paraiso Beach / Del Mar later this year. My father and his girlfriend are coming with us and we're thinking of getting walkie talkies, to arrange meeting points etc.

Are there any restrictions on Walkie Talkies, channels to use or anything in this area?

I can't answer your question on whether or not there are any restrictions. However, at the resort we stayed at in January there was a large extended family of grandparents, adults and children having their family reunion. They used a number of walkie talkies to keep track of the kids mainly I think. They seemed to spend very little time at the beach, preferring the pool area. The few times we used the pool and sat close to them I found rather annoying having to listen to their constant chatter on the walkie talkies (kids to kids, parents to kids).

We've stayed at a number of resorts (big and small) on a number of Caribbean islands and I've never seen tourists with walkie talkies before (although that doesn't mean there weren't any).

Thank you cja we saw a few American families using them at the Iberostar Tucan last year too, that's what gave us the idea.

It's to keep track of the great-grandparents we want them, not for chatting :-?

I just thought I'd check if anyone knew if there were any local laws or anything we should be aware of before buing them.

My wife and I always take a certain amount of electronics with us - laptop, mp3 players, cameras-camcorders, etc....lincluding the 2-way multi-channel walkie-talkie equipment when we are at the larger resorts and the beach/room/shopping areas are a ways from where we might be together...

We've never had so much as a second look, or experienced any restrictions...Haven't used them much, but sure handy during those times when we have needed them...

What frequency / channels did you use cuffedlinks?

I haven't bought the radios yet and want to be sure that I buy some that can be used in Mexico and at home in UK. There seem to be so many to choose from.

We had a set that does have the subsets for channels....for example we might pick a certain channel (up to 22) and subchannel (up to 38) one day and switch it the next...something obscure so as not to intrude or step on anyone else (not that we ever did)...generally we did say 22-22, or 11-11...somethng easy...

I like ours...it scans for local public weather access and has a compass on it....range to 7 miles unobstructed...

Thank you,

I'd better look at something better than the 8 channel basic models then.
