The connection is tenuous at best. We have about 40,000 Somali residents, the vast majority of which came here during the civil wars in Somalia. Most Somalians living here are hard working wage earners. The percentage of bad eggs among Somalians is on par with the rest of us gringos, Hispanics and Hmong.
IMHO, the hard-core Islamists have been very quick to pick up on the ins and outs of using the media to further their cause. Also, IMHO, the metro Minneapolis/St. Paul is extremely liberal (voted 86% for Gore in 2000). This suits the Imams and is part of the reason for the Flying Imams, cabbies and the election of the first Muslim in the U.S. Congress.
If you detect a slight tilt toward the right, I'm guilty. I have seen my beautiful "City of Lakes", (like New Orleans), where I've lived 60 years under Democratic rule, go to hell. But, that's another thread.
When I started this thread, I asked if anyone else in the world has experienced this phenomenon of cabbies refusing service. So far no one has directly answered this question, so I will assume that we are the exception.
