Even taking Pepto pills every day 'just in case' can have unwanted side effects that make you miserable (and certainly Immodium does!) ... take it from me....only treat when you have symptoms, not before. Just because she had issues one trip does not make a pattern....I have had 2 bouts of food or water related (not the tequila!) illness in Mexico but it's not typical for me.

Try the yogurt or acidophilis pills....wash hands frequently, don't get tap water in your mouth, wash fruit and veggie skins with Microdyne if staying in a condo and cooking on your own, drink bottled water, avoid eating in restaurants with no soap in the washrooms ....stay out of the sun as much as possible and don't drink too much booze....most likely you will be fine.
Agree, agree, agree!!! Another agree is taking an antibiotic as a preventative, not a good idea, you build a resistance to it and when you are REALLY sick and need it it may not work. FWIW, after being able to take Cipro for years I just one day became allergic to it!

Snaps.....when in Playa last Novemeber I was able to buy Z-Packs at 3 difference pharms...

it is gonna get harder, not easier to buy antibiotics
after the fiscales fine them a couple of times, they will not do it
it is a stiff penalty

even my mexican friends come to me for scrips when they need them now cause they don't want to have to pay for a dr's visit
it is simple enough to go to a dr simi doctor for 30 pesos and get an Rx, then buy your drugs legally at the same place

I don't disagree with you about overuse of antibiotics. The fact is that we're in our mid 50's and take absolutely no prescription drugs, very little over the counter stuff, and haven't needed antibiotics in years. This is why I don't feel that he is in danger of developing an immunity, or even endangering the world by creating a superbug....
Vacation is better if you don't get sick. Period. Paragraph.

Yes, thanks Jimontheriver. We're going to ask our doc for Xifaxin this year!! Note how it talks about taking small doses as a prophylactic before you leave -- this is what has worked for my husband for the past 3 years.....

Some antibiotics can make your skin very very sensitive to the sun...I know from experience. I'd rather sit on the toilet 12 times a day than have to sit in the shade 24/7!

Montezuma's

For preventive help it's wise to build up healthy flora in the gut by using a good acidophilus daily.
Most appreciated advice I ever got before my first trip to Mexico~ If you get Montezuma's revenge take Lomotil.
I've seen it in drug stores & hotel gift shops.

Had a pretty bad case last year, after 3 days of immodium with no results I just downed a small bottle of coke on an empty stomach and drank yogourt right after. That worked for me...lol..
