Playa here we come

So glad I found this forum. Hoping to continue searching and finding more useful information. Our family along with my mom and sister will be coming in March. We're renting a condo off 5th avenue area and looks like we'll be close to a lot from that location. Mainly I'm searching for good tips on groceries (I think we're leaning toward using the Mega store to stock up) and trip suggestions for going to Tulum, Xel ha, etc and whether or not we should book a trip or just rent a cab for the ride down and do our own thing. We'd also like to take the ferry over to Cozumel to snorkel/beach one day and we're wondering if it is better to just rent a car there for the day then try and book a "snorkel trip." Thanks to everyone for their tips I've been reading so far!

Welcome!

I would suggest a tour to Tulum for the informative benefits of having a guide the first time there. Same with any of the theme parks. It's just easier and you will relax about the trip more.

The ferry to Cozumel is easy to catch and you can make plans once there.

You will not need any help finding good food or drink in Playa.

You can catch the collectivo or the bus to Tulum. Get your ferry tickets by the dock. When in Cozumel, we usually rent a scooter or jeep and drive around the island, it's fun and not as scary as driving the Hwy 307!

Try a collectivo to Akumal

We stayed in Akumal for over 3 weeks about a year ago. Whenever we are in Playa, we make a point of taking a collectivo to there. We love the beach and Yakul lagoon is great too. Try Lol Ha for a nice drink on the beach. You can snorkel with the turtles right off the shore.

If you are going to snorkel, you might be better off going to Akumal or Puerto Morelos. Snorkeling in Cozumel can be nice, but you have to know where to go. If you go on one of the trips you buy off the street, the water is going to be deep and you are not going to see to much. It may say "shallow reef", but when you get there it is really like 30ft-50ft,you also have to remember that the Ferry is like $12 bucks each way per person, so that adds up.

If you research this site, you can find places to snorkel in Cozumel, there are some maps around here with places marked like the money bar. If you plan it, you can pay a taxi driver to take you to good spots on the island. Now if this sounds like to much of a day, you can get a pretty good snorkeling trip in Puerto Morels, and they are actually shallow reefs!! Maybe not as pretty as Cozumels reefs, but they are nice reefs with lots of fish and much shallower more like 7' to 12" maybe a little deeper in spots. You also have to remember that the Ferry is like $12 bucks each way per person, so that adds up.
