1) Xococolatier: they were working inside and there was new equipment. I assume that it will reopen soon with a new owner. 2) The restaurant above Baremar is named Maya Luna or Luna Maya. By the time I walked home I forgot just which one it was . Sign says "Mexican Cuisine". Ran into a friend when I was up that way and he had eaten there. He described the food as different but good. Dinner for 2 was 600 pesos. The only way to get to the restaurant is a small elevator in a hallway to the left of Baremar. The stairs are broken ......well at least the doorway (door) to the stairs is broken. They will need more than luck to survive IMO.

Wow, I can't believe the floor above Baremar is a different restaurant. I was over there two weeks ago and walked up to Baremar to look at the menu. We wound up eating outside at Cocina 38 and were commenting on how nice the 2nd floor of Baremar looked! No idea this was a different establishment, they really need some signage fast! We also love Piola and La Cueva. There was a tapas place too right across on the south side of 38th that looked interesting. I can't wait to try the Cuban place as well...looks like a great spot to listen to live music and smoke a cigar. This is what I had hoped would happen to the north end when we bought there.

We have also eaten at Baremar and found the food and service excellent. The hostess seated us and immediately said to my husband, tonight is your lucky night for "hombres" it is 50% off on Mondays for everything except wine. The waiter was most attentive and could answer our questions about the various dishes that were offered.
The tortilla chips were fresh and three different dips came with them. Coffee was freshly made and hot. Will check the Mojitos out next time. They repeatedly returned to check on us without being intrusive and no problem with the bill. We truly felt that every effort was made to make sure that our dining experience would be a pleasant one. " Mujeres" have 50% off on Tuesdays. and on Wednesday drinks are 2 for 1...Not including wine. We had the pasta which we both enjoyed and will be trying the Salmon on our next visit. The chocolate brownie with ice cream was a nice finish to the meal. Washrooms very clean and modern with auto flush and auto tap on/off. Hope that it does well and maintains the same standard that we experienced. |

I love the mini crab cakes, the Tostadas de marlin ahumado, tiritas de atun, and cazuela de pulpo in their entrees (don't ask me to translate )The shrimp aguachiles are good, but HOT!!!!!!!!!! Tuna steak is good, also the shimp pinchos (skewers with mango sauce). I was there on a monday or tuesday forgot which, too bad I always order wine ![]() |

Gosh darn it, now I'm hungry. I hope to try out Piola in May. Too bad I don't eat seafood, as it sounds like Baremar has a good variety of it. I sure hope that some signage goes up and quick on the second floor restaurant.

Restaurant 38 st
COMO COMO!
Very cusy atmosphire.Great food, recomended to come befor 7pm or after 9 pm. Those hours are less busy so you get better food and better service. The chef StefanO REALLY knows what he is doing. I always go there when i have to get my hair done. A glass of wine, pedicure manicure with Gretel at Vida salon and then some greek salad and lamb chop (excellent) at como como. really like those days. I love this part of town!! I just returned from Playa after a 10 week stay at home, and found 7 new places open or opening. I need feedback on your experiences with many of them, because I cannot try them all out for inclusion in the restaurant list. Here is a list of the places surrounding this new hot spot corner: On 38th Street: Cueva de Chango - Fantastic and reliable place that gave the name 'funky' to Playa's best experiences. Best breakfast in town. La Piola - Lovely new pizza and pasta place with a great jungle feel to the setting. IMO the best pizza in town, and the pasta is excellent. La Cava - Have not tried this. A wine bar, but I think with more to note. Baremar - Beautiful seafood place that has been struggling a bit and needs time to refine its food and service. But it should do well once it gets settled. There is a mexican place that just opened in the floor above. I have no name for it or reports. Give me feedback. La Portena - small place with only 5 stools and the best Argentinian sausage sandwich in town. La Rampa - New Pizza place. Any people tried this? El Emporio - Fine Argentianian style meat place that seems too empty for the high quality of its food. They say it is Uruguayan food, but I cannot tell the difference from Argentinian. Along La Quinta: La Bodega del Medio just opened between 32nd and 34th and it is beautiful and has a terrific band of Cuban music. Great for drinks and appetizers, but I have not heard great reports on their dinners. Chez Celine and Da Gabi - Between 32nd and 34th this bright new plaza haz Chez Celine with its great breakfasts and French pastry and breads and Da Gabi with pretty good Italian food. Cocina 38 - Continental food of the best order. Best tuna carpaccio I ever ate. IMO the best meal in town. Deli Panini - A tiny ne place selling 15 kinds of paninis with 4 stools. Cool Fish - Fish place that originally chased everyone away with their foolishly loud music, but that toned down and I see some customers there. Any reports on the food? El Facon - A new Argentinian restaurant in the same vein as El Diez. The food is not as good as other meat places and the prices are not cheap. Pacha Mama - Small but comfortable with a lighter menu of salads, sandwiches and fish dishes. Como Como - A great new Italian restaurant that seats maybe 30 people. The chef is talented, but often seems to rush his food with the loss of that finished sine qua non. People love this place. Guacamole - This is the 3rd transformation of this location in 2 years. It seems dark and uninviting, but who knows what they turn out? El Taco Bongo - A shiny new taco place that looks pretty spiffy. They were just getting ready to open when I left. Quiote a choice of new places. Give them all a turn and please post your experiences for the consideration of other Playa regulars and newbies.[/quote] |
