Riu Yucatan -- Any Advice, Tips, Warnings, etc.??
Hi. My girlfriend and I are in our late 20's and will be staying at the Riu Yucatan - on the all inclusive plan. We arrive on March 1st. Any input at all would be very helpfull - along the lines of tips, advice, complaints, compliments, suggestions, "Wish I would of's", "Sorry I did's"....
well, you get the picture. I'd also like to add that I have found this forum to be quite entertaining and informative... so thanks to everyone who takes the time to share their knowledge. Thanks!!! |

I'm at the Riu Yucatan now....
We're staying at the Yucatan now and I've got very few complaints. There are too many Americans with kids here right now, other than that, it's not bad. (and before a ruckus starts, I am an American....great people but often lousy travelers).
Have you stayed at an all inclusive before? There's nothing really different here than at any other you may have stayed at. The food is good. Sadly, they're not enforcing the long pants at dinner rule. Some of my fellow diners look like they just finished putting a new transmission in the Dodge before their evening meal. Any specifics? Ask away. |

Hey We will be at the RIU Tequila arriving in the the 2nd the Tuesday. We cant wait. I have read so much on the RIU Resorts and 9 out of 10 reviews are great, very happy people. I would ignore the bad reviews. I must have been through 300 reviews. Tipping you dont have to but the people work so hard down there and get next to nothing for pay, so we tip randomly, the maid every day, you will have the same waiter for supper every day. Its up to you but I think people should tip, there and everywhere where people are waiting on you. Anyways hope you have a great trip, and if you looking to hang out with others looks like were going to have a good group meeting from allover, no one knows anyone but getting together for drinks at night. Met on this site and the unofficial RIU website. I think you can email us through this board. So let us know if you looking to socialize. If not have a great trip. Pam and Kev

Thanks everyone for the information!
Thanks all for the info-- very helpfull.
Joe -- I've never been to an AI or PDC for that matter. Can you give me some insight on the following: Typical buffet food and the restaurants? Booze? (what kinds are included? etc.) Do they offer bottled water? Do they have room safes, and do they cost extra to use? Can you eat/play at the other RIU resorts? Again -- thanks for taking the time to provide information. It's very much appreciated!! |

Riu rundown
AJ,
The booze is fine. There's not a huge variety. We have a friend who won't drink anything but Ketel One vodka, so he'd be s.o.l., but they serve Jim Beam bourbon, Havana Club rum, Cuervo tequila, etc. Sure when you ask for a drink you'll get the well brand unless you ask. I'm drinking the Mojito especaile which mi amigo Jose knows means I want Havana Club. Bottled water, no problem. You get 3 liters in your room to start and it's refilled regularly. Food is good. Different but good. They cater to Europeans so some of the things are a little odd. Last night we had Pork roast stuffed with plums. Grandma never made it like that, but it wasn't bad. We ate at the steak restaruran that's a la carte and it was good. Not a Ruth's Chris, but good. We're with some picky eaters and they're doing fine. Each room has a safe and it's free. I'd ask for an extra room key at check in that way you and your girlfriend can move independently if needed. You can go to any other Riu except the Palace. It's off limits except for organized tours. We've been to the Playacar and it's nice. A little newer than the Yucatan, has a bigger pool, and they have better ice cream. Other than that, not much difference. We've not been to the Tequila since they have no beach. |
