A reason not to drive at night between Escarcega and Chetumal

New signs on the road

My recommendation is to arrive to the area one hour prior to sunset so you can enjoy the following experience

The highway has been widened a bit and improved bewteen Escarcega and Xpujil, hope they continue all the way to Chetumal

More pics here with more details and geotagging.

And of course YOU CAN DRIVE THIS ROUTE AT NIGHT, no problem at all, I did it after watching the bats, and arrived at Bacalar in time to have dinner and do some grocery shopping.

Yup, I had forgotten how to post YouTube videos, that's why you got the empty boxes,
But now it's fixed.

My recomendation to drive at night in that specific area, slow down as bats can't avoid being hit by cars if they go too fast for them to take evasive maneuvers. Fortunately I didn't see any road kill in the area, but that may be because there are many predators looking to have a bat-dinner.

I had a bat in my house once. Freaked me out!

I would too if it was in my house, but at theirs, it was totally cool and not scary at all. Standing at the edge of the cave I saw a lot of near collisions that were avoided by bats flying in opposite directions and just turned in the last mili-seconds before hitting each other. If you are prepared to witness the exit you will enjoy it, the bats will never touch you, I stood there for more than an hour and it was totally amazing.

Exactly! We have grackles (sp?) that swarm around and between our high-rises and will then end up on wires, side by side, in precision.

They fly very fast and take evasive maneuvers so it may be a bit freaky to some, but if you go with the knowleadge that they wont' harm you and that they are trying by all means to avoid touching you, it may be a bit more enjoyable and the fact that they eat tons of insects every night should be a big motivation to care for them.
