Okay. The fare in town is now 20 pesos.
We know that.
If you hail a taxi and ask what the fare is, I guarantee you it won't be 20 pesos. Probably 50. Or more.
Oh. Now that the fare is 20 pesos...tip is included.

Alux is closed. Don't worry about it.

Not a clue. I don't venture out of the city much - except in our car.
I would ask the concierge at the hotel - they might be more reliable than the driver.

NORMALLY the best thing to do it is know the cost and pay it after you reach your destination. No negotiating involved. However, with this recent fare increase no one knows what the correct rate is (except for fares within zone 1 = 20 pesos and to Playacar = 70 pesos).

If you ask in advance you may very well be over charged for the trip. If you just aren't comfortable with the arrive and pay method, maybe you could tell the driver where you want to go and then confirm the price (ie, "$20 pesos, correct?" ) rather than to just ask "how much?" Maybe in this case the driver will figure that you are 'in the know' and won't easily be scammed in to paying too much.

Hopefully someone will get their hands on an official rate sheet soon and then we'll all KNOW how much the fare really is. Will sure make life easier

Taxi drivers love tourists who ask what the fare is. IIRC airport road to 34th and 100 to the west is zone 1 and 20 pesos.

Playacar should be 50 though
We paid 100 for a big van and 50 for regular cabs.

Wait I'm rereading playacar is 70 now? We were there till the 21 of February 2011 have the rate sheets changed since then? Is that playacar 1 or 2?
We only had one guy try to charge the 70 and were there 4 weeks.

Look at the title of the thread
The fares have increased.
50 pesos to 70 pesos is a big jump - I suppose the sindicato feels folks in Playacar can afford it - kinda like CFE

My apologies I missed that they were starting this march 1. I wouldn't take a cab anywhere if it meant that type of difference seriously you can get it down closer to 30 just walking out to the gate. I guess next year if we come back we'll walk everywhere (at least to the gate) or rent a car. I wouldn't take a cab just because I'd feel like I was being ripped off because of the neighborhood. Realistically at that price 1 cab ride a day to and from say chedraui = 140 pesos car looks much more affodable.
Plus I found all that walking to be great exercise.
We could all buy bikes even at that cost since we take longer trips.

I had to go to Playacar yesterday for dinner; the taxi driver started warning me about the taxi rate increase prior to my stop. I said, "Oh yes, it was 30 pesos for locals before, but now it's 50 pesos." He hesitated before saying, "Well, ok, amiga, it will be 50 pesos for you, and that is what we charge the working people, but for the people who live in Playacar, the rich people, it's 70 pesos." Immediately after he said that, I could tell he wished he hadn't. I could hardly believe my ears.
