Just Booked my First Trip to Playa...

I'm so excited to be going to Mexico for the first time and I think we will love the Playa area. We will be there June 8-18 and staying at the Royal Hideaway. If there is anyone else who will be there during this time and would like to meet for a drink please let me know.

I have one question that is a major concern for both my husband and myself. We do not speak spanish . Is this going to be a major problem for us or are most of the locals bilingual? We were in Punta Cana a few years ago and the only person at the resort that spoke english was the concierge and we had some really difficult communication problems with the hotel staff. I had spanish in high school quite a few years ago and I am considering taking a refresher course or buying some of the "learn while you drive" tapes for the car before we go. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to your responses and I can't wait to go!

Nancy

Nancy,

Welcome and you'll LOVE PDC...I haven't stayed at the Royal Hideaway but from what I've seen in passing and heard from others it is the cream of the crop of Luxury Resorts in the area...I stayed at the Riu Palace just to the south, and it's a close runner-up...

The language will be no barrier...especially at the resort, nor did we find it so anywhere else...people seem to get by.

Do your searches from this forum using the Search feature and you'll find an answer to most any question...

Give us a trip report and some photos when you are back!!

If you run into problems you can try
A) speaking English very slowly and loudly, it never works but hey you might luck out.
B)Pardon, Soy del Estados Unidos, no hablo espanol, hablas ingles?
If plan b fails smile alot and nod I got through 1/2 of Europe just based on my nodding and hand gestures.

We were just in Punta Cana in January and did find there to be somewhat of a language barrier. Playa del Carmen is nothing like that! Everyone in the tourist industry speaks English, and usually a couple of other languages as well.
