Negril consists of two distinct areas- the beach (7 Mile Beach, which is apparently only 4 mles...I guess they meant 7 Kilometre Beach, maybe? ) and 'the cliffs' to the south.

The cliffs are home to the most upscale boutique hotels in the area, some lesser ones, and several restaurants....the famous 'Rick's Cafe' and the cliff divers there....we knew it was a tourist trap and avoided that along with Margaritaville.

Rick's Cafe

We did some research and went to two different places during our week that we read were good for lunch and drinks and where you could use the facilities loungers for free so long as you patronized them.

The first time was our second full day there, we went to Xtabi. The cove and the hotel have the same name. We did some snorkeling and had Eggs Benedict for breakfast- no ham and BRIGHT yellow hollandaise, but tasted better than it looked. We spent about 4 hours there, great day.

water is CRYSTAL clear....but the snorkeling was not great there.

Stairs leading down to the caves...

see how yellow!!

restaurant:

Don snorkeling (edit- Whoops, that is me!)

Don hanging out reading in the hammock

me cliff diving!

funny how it was so calm for being open ocean

Next Rockhouse!

Wow, what beautiful water!!!! You're right....so calm. I was in Barbados once and that's what I remember about it, the calm waters. Not like you see in Playa.

Yahoo, girl ......nice jump!!!

I landed on my butt in a sitting position.

Actually it was more my pride that was hurt....the four Italian boys watching were snickering (but they never did it! )

Loved the cliff diving from the Rockhouse, sooo much fun. My husband also found some beautiful sand dollars while snorkeling there, I have them displayed in my bathroom in a big glass vase with other shells. The snapper sandwich on coco bread with jerk mayo at their pool grill is to die for.

Yea the cliffs! Love it! I've never been inside Xtabi - it doesn't seem to have a lot of greenery, mostly stone. Is that an accurate impression?

But cliff jumping? Oh HELLZ NO! Won't see me flinging myself off a rock into the ocean any time soon. Although Jason jumped from the highest point when we were at The Caves (near the lighthouse) - must have been around a 30 foot jump

But, or Butt Cliff jumping? I couldn't resist.

I wouldn't do it either.

Loving your trip report, Maggie!

I am not exactly graceful, to say the least. I think it was about 20 feet, maybe more? I was terrified to jump and then just stepped out....yikes! I had LOTS of time to have my life flash before my eyes!

Amy- yes, it was mostly rock, not a lot of greenery or shade really....not nearly as nice as the Rockhouse.

There was also a little weirdness with the bill when we left....more than the usual extra 17% or whatever it is was added on, and then she shorted me when giving me change....kind of annoying. None of that funny business went on whatsoever at Rockhouse, and the staff were far friendlier...we would definitely go back there over Xtabi next time.

Heather- I am sure I saw that on the menu there! I had a BLT. I was craving something besides Jamaican food by then, I think it was our fifth day when we made it up to Rockhouse.

Here are the pics from there.

The taxi dropped us off and we walked up to the guard booth and told the guard we were there to have lunch....no problem, mon, go that way....walked to the restaurant:

She told us they were not serving lunch for a couple hours yet (which we had figured) but you can go sit down there and swim and snorkel while you wait?

Uh, don't mind if we do, thanks very much!

Gorgeous!

It was shaded but not too cool on that rock, it was another hot one that day...all week it was about 28 C (83F). The water was about the same temp, maybe a couple degrees cooler, perfect.

The snorkeling here was WAY better than at Xtabi....gorgeous coral and a nice variety of fish...I followed two good-sized squid for quite a distance, they were rapidly changing colours, really neat.

There was a little cave entrance behind.

People were diving behind this little building.

The oceanfront villas range from about 350-450 during high season....ouch! But wouldn't it be nice to stay here, even for 2-3 nights? Your own private swimming area and platform.

We saw these catamarans in the next cove after we had lunch and were sitting there sipping our Red Stripes...

and then I said...

HEY!

There is something a bit wrong with the people on that cat....

Most of them were naked.

It was the 'Tuesday Naked Cat Cruise' from Hedo.

OH! Nice! The cliffs and the grotto remind me of La Jolla cove in San Diego. Only with clear warn water added. Those pics alone could sell me on a visit.
