What's that Restaurant (and is it good)

A couple of days ago we walked past a restaurant on 10th Avenue around 60th Street that seemed busy with people eating good looking chilaquiles and such, and it had a large red sign saying they had pancita and pozole on Saturdays. Today around 2pm the sign was rolled up and the place seemed empty. Did they close? do they run out of pancita early? is it dinner only? any good?

p.s. to assist with the location - there's a fancy (for then neighborhood) looking place called Epazote something a block north on the other side of the road. Also surprisingly way up there (closed when we walked by) an Italian pasta factory and a raw food/vegan restaurant.

the one on the east side has excellent comida del dia and also has menu

epazote used to be two blocks further north and makes really good mexican food
she has been slinging hash for several years
great pozole, huaraches, etc

can't go wrontg with either place
maybe we should go over there on tuesday??

Well, Epazote (El Epazote?) turned out to be a perfectly nice place for lunch - two choices for main course - albondigas with one of the local squashes (p.s. If you see the green flying saucer calabazitas around buy them and cook them, they rock) or chicken mole, delicious lentil soup to start and some sort of fruit jelly for dessert, no alcohol.

The other place mentioned seems to have gone.

Another place of interest - southwest corner of 4th st and 25th ave. NO name but plenty of hand written signs advertising various antojitos and cazon dishes.

hahaha
was in tulum at camelo, seafood store and restaurant south of town that is always crowded with locals
i sat with an american couple and noticed a dish on the table and asked what it was
they told me racoon, hmmmmmm
i said i thought it was some kind of fish, and he insisted it was racoon

ummmmmmm, no, i don't think so
turned out to be cazon, which is a small shark, and pretty tasty

el camelo is a very good place to get a very generous and tasty seafood meal for a very good price
nice cold beer and lots of local color

Are you referring to El Camello (The camel) by any chance?

I have been to Camello Jr on the North, eeeer, SOUTH side of Tulum, towards the highway to Carrillo Puerto.

Very good and crowded, very very crowded.

I've been to the South side Camello in Tulum a couple of times, just off the highway on the way out of town. Excellent ceviche and from what I could see around me, some tasty whole fried fish.

Ok, just wanted to check, because Camelo can be a guy's name and also competitors use that strategy to steal customers, hehe

Here are some pics from Camello Jr.

with a "small" order of ceviche, fortunately I didn't order the big one

around 6 PM when I left, it was packed

and they sell by the kilo to go, raw or cooked.

That is the same place I meant, but it's South, not North. I didn't notice the 'Jr.' in the name before; maybe this means there is another one somewhere.

You are totally right, coming from Carrillo Puerto IS South, hahaha, I will correct my post. But Where is the Sr.? I just noticed the Jr. because of the crowd.

I think we'll try this in a few days.

Has anyone been to Quijote, the Spanish restaurant on 10th & 44th?

Un rincón de España en Playa del Carmen, Corazón de la Riviera Maya | Restaurante Bar Quijote

The interior looks nice and the menu very authentic (I mean you'd have to be Spanish to serve Ensalada Rusa )

That was very good. A little cazon stew as an amuse, then ceviche (they have chivitas, which I knew grew around here but haven't had before - yum), sopa de mariscos - gigantic and delicious, and pulpo with garlic. This meal at 34 degrees after a few hours snorkeling in Akumal... nearly fell asleep while driving back.

A sight to be seen is their jumbo ceviche - they served it to a table of 10 or so - it's $300 and looks like it can feed 20 people.
