It's easier to find a bus into Limones than directly into Mahahual. Most busses that go into Chetumal stop in Limones. It will cost around 280 peso's to get from Limones to Mahahual via taxi. Busses in to Mahahual are rare. I'd recommend the same for leaving. The busses run around every hour from Limones to Playa (my husband had to stand they can be very full) there is an ADO station in Limones that will sell you the tickets.
There are busses from Mahahual to Playa but they are only at 5:30 pm and the bus only runs I believe Thurs, Fri and Sunday (maybe one other day I can't remember).
Another plus of leaving through Limones is the lady in the ADO station leaving Limones towards Playa makes fresh salbutes, and empanadas. They are delicious and cheap, definitely the best I've had. I'm not sure on recommendations to stay. I've heard of 40 canones not sure what the price is. I can look next time we are in town. There seem to be LOTS of hotels in town that I can't find easily online. I would guess even as a walk in that there should be no problem finding a room. Since we've arrived the town has changed they've been putting in beautiful sidewalks, and working continually. The Malecon is much much longer than I expected. Vendors are less aggressive here as well for the most part especially on non cruise ship days.

We liked having a rental car that allowed us to explore the beach road some and do a day trip to Xcalak. The drive from Playa was a breeze, particularly after getting past Tulum. Not much traffic.

If you look at both roni's and my most recent trip reports (from November/December 2011) you'll see lots of photos etc. of Mahahual, as well as info as to where we both stayed.
also, jevans posted this one in early 2011.
I love, love, love Mahahual!

Is the ADO bus still running & is this schedule correct - if ADO direct is not an option will do bus to Limones and then to Mahahual.
Thanks in advance.

ADO stopped running direct to Mahahual - take bus to Limones and then either taxi or bus from Limones to either Mahahual or Xcalak.
They told us in May that "MAY" start running again next busy season.

ADO Bus

Any idea of cost of taxi from Limones to Mahahual. Also any idea of the bus schedule from Limones to Mahahual and then back to Limones and catching ADO to Playa.

Bus - Playa to Limones -- Mayab - 2nd class = 122 peso. Runs about every 1 to 2 hours. Check @ bus station for exact. Don't remember. Think ours left @ 10:30 AM. Think also 1 or 2 only 1st Class ADO bus - don't remember time but did not work for us. Think we left Limones back to Playa about 1:30 PM - again check with Mayab for exact. Fares was same on way back.

Taxi: We paid 600 peso's to Mahahual. Did not want to wait for bus. Catch taxi across 307 from Limones Bus Station. Always lots of taxis there - might be able to negotiate rate. Per locals 600 is high - should be 500 or less.

A great taxi driver from Mahahual is Oscar - call him on number below - he will p/u in Limones and take to Mahahual - he speaks good english - great guy - tell him got number from Loyd & Barb:
Took a Mahahual taxi from Caballo Blanco Hotel (center of Mahahual on Malecon) 5-13-2012. $400 peso to Xcalak - then $10 peso each k to Sandwood (8 k).
Taxi Driver is Oscar Garcia (speaks pretty good english) Taxi #105 - lives in Mahahual.
Quotes from Oscar:
Mahahual to Chetamul - $700 Round Trip -- Yes - we took it to Chetamul to pay our taxes - had to get "new" paperwork.
Xcalak to Limones - $600 Peso's + $10 for each K down beach road.
Call him - he will pick up Xcalak or Limones to Mahahual or etc.
He was very good to us - helped us with Spanish to English - get copies - & etc. on taxes.
Please feel free to contact him: cell #: 983-136-0006 or home # 983-156-3601.

Mahahual

It looks like the ADO is not running direct to Mahahual anymore. Can anyone confirm that. If it is not running any idea when it will start?

They do have a wealth of information on their website! We've just booked a night with them for our upcoming trip.

Copied from Sac-Be October newsletter: Sac-be.com | Source of Riviera Maya and Costa Maya Travel Information

A couple of points of interest to those traveling from Cancun to Mahahual:

1. At the present time there is no ADO bus service to Mahahual. If traveling by public transportation, you will need to catch the Mayab bus that leaves from the Cancun bus terminal or from the PDC bus terminal on Fifth Avenue. They run frequently (about every hour) ... but they do not post their schedules online. From there you will need to disembark at Limones and take a taxi to your destination in Mahahual.

2. There is no longer an HSBC bank machine in Mahahual and the private ATM machines are charging as much as 80 pesos per transaction. You would be wise to use a "bank" machine in PdC, Tulum or Felipe Carillo Puerto, if possible.
