Oddly enough I don't recall seeing them in Oaxaca at all....mostly just the black pottery and mezcal there.
Not all the towns in Oaxaca produces them, it was an idea taken from the papier machee Alebrijes in Mexico city, but using carved wood instead of the wireframe.

The beauty is that no two alebrijes look similar, it depends solely in the imagination of the artisan and the piece of wood.

Cool..I think I have one of those...is this one? I believe my brother bought it thinking it would annoy me. It couldn't have cost very much because he is notoriously cheap...

Sure is...either your brother got a great deal, or he isn't as cheap as you think he is

Here are a few of my little ones that I keep on a shelf in one of the bathrooms . These are 3-4" high. Price tag still on the bottom of the elephant shows $24.95 USD as well as the style Alebrije

Sorry for pic quality. Taken from blackberry. I am in desperate need of a new camera.

There is a shop called "Caracol" on 5th across from Hotel Lunata that sells them. A bit pricey, but they have them.

They are MUCH more expensive in Playa than they are in Oaxaca, believe me! I've seen some in Akumal as well, in the little pink store right on the path to the beach if you're going towards Lol Ha. They are about triple what you'd pay in Oaxaca City, unfortunately. The price depends on how detailed the painting is and the size of it, for the most part. The more detail, the more you pay.
