WTF? I need some kind of religious or dietary exemption to send my child to school with his own lunch?[/quote]
I'd never let my kids eat that processed crap on a daily basis. If I needed an exemption I'd just write "Leviticus 11" on their lunch bag and send them on their way. And push come to shove I'd claim a dietary exemption due to my religious beliefs. Seriously, no joke. Whenever I book travel on major airlines overseas, and a meal is offered, I opt for the Kosher. I won't get any of the pork or shellfish that I love but I will get a better quality meal that is prepared in a proper manner and free of many toxins that normal processed foods contain. Why wouldn't I want the same for my kids? (Or your kids) And, yes, this does come down to a seperation of church and state issue. |

So what kind of lunch would you make for your kid ?
Something with "bread" or processed meat ? Bag of chips ? or pretzels ? Some fruit ? (school lunches have this) Most school lunches (at least where I live) are better for kids than what they bring from home. But I do agree they should have a choice. |

As for my kids, my wife and I try to point them in the right direction by providing the healthest choises we can find. Whole grains, fresh fruit and veg, limited processed meats or cheese and limited sweets. The passed four years our kids have taken a sack lunch that needs no warming. But they are able to choose for themselves what they like to eat. They make their own lunches. We ask them what they want and we give them the ingredients to make it (within reason). My wife is wonderful about checking up on what's being put in the lunch sacks. And between the two of us we can cook many homemand meals every week. But with everything we try to do it is just not enough. We still eat "fast food" 2 or 3 times a week. And we rely on frozen, canned or processed food much more than we should. At least I'm aware. That's a pretty good start. |

Right, let people vote out consitution right out the window. If we did that we would still have slaves, segregation, misogeny laws and women would still be property. So yeah, lets put it all to a vote. |

I am not getting the 'connection' between church and state on this issue? Lawyers, either....does anyone think lawyers were behind this? Sounds like it was a local level, school board and staff and parents decision.
If Chicago inner city schools are anything like our inner city schools- many kids are lucky to get breakfast or any type of lunch packed for them at all. If the ends justify the means (as in, kids get some nutritious food into them, thereby helping their health and focus and ability to learn)- then maybe this program is a good think, regardless of how huffy it makes some people get. |

True story- one of my aunts' students brings this every single day. No bread, no can opener, just a tin of salmon. Reserve school, not inner city, though.I guess maybe I have heard too many stories like this one, I am cynical about how wonderful the parenting really is at these schools, generally. I am sure the Principal got sick and tired over the years of seeing stuff like this and wanted to help the kids. Don't you think her heart was likely in the right place? I understand the indignation, I just think it's misplaced.

That is my point
The school lunches I have seen are better than what most kids bring in a "sack lunch". Choice of fruit, milk, whole wheat roll, veggie and meat or fish on Fridays. You could also go through the salad line as well. I would do lunch room duty once a month and I always ate with them. It was a very good lunch for the price. All of the food was cooked onsite...the spaghetti was a favorite. I would go so far as to say it is better than the sack lunches I pack for her now. Which she wont eat 50% of the time. I wish she would eat at school now, but she says it takes to long to go thru the line and then she does not have enough time to eat. (which IS a problem in most schools) We cook every night....so most of the time she waits till she gets home to heat up last nights leftovers. |

Seems like there is alot of curiousity on school lunch menus. I will post ours here...not to debate, but just for curious minds.
Here is the menu at my boys grade school, and the nutritional content. (*note it may say high school, but all schools in the district get the same lunches). At face value, some choices may look like junk food (chicken fingers, pizza bites), but they did go through a major nutritional overhaul a few years ago, contracted with a new company, etc...and the goal was to provide much healthier lunch choices, so the key might be to look at the individual nutritional data for each menu option as opposed to making a snap judgement based on the title of the menu item/food. Note at the bottom of the menu how it says that "school lunches provides your child with 1/3 of the recommended dietary allowances for his/her age group. We offer child-friendly foods that in many cases have been specially formulated to be low in fat while providing the flavor and calories your child needs." I don't have time to rename the links, but here is the menu first, and nutritional content link, second. http://www.op97.org/lunch/AprilElementaryLunch11.pdf http://www.op97.org/lunch/AprilElementary2011.PDF |
