Iberostar Entertainment

We are considering Cancun AI in October 2004. Can anyone provide info on entertainment at Lindo and other IB hotels? I understand that entertainment at the Palladium Grand is top notch and Riu Placace is amateurish.

When we visited the Iberostar Paraiso in August, we thought the entertainment was average in quality. It was better than most cruise ships we've been on, but not as good as the entertainment at Sandals or Secrets. The daytime events, such as salsa dance lessons, were few but good. Most of the entertainment consisted of shows in the theater in the evenings. We enjoyed the first couple of shows pretty well, but we were bored by the end of the week because of the repetition.

The amateur children’s show was actually our favorite. The kids rehearsed each day and put on a very cute show in the evenings. After that show, the theater usually featured music videos and/or game shows for an hour or two. The game shows were excruciating. For example, the “rock and roll dance game” invited 8-10 couples up on the stage to dance to the same 3 snatches of songs over and over. After each round, the host would ask an audience member to eliminate one couple. No one wanted to do so, so no couples were ever eliminated. This went on and on until we went for a walk to escape. The “Elvis strip-tease” show also went on forever.

Later in the evening, the staff put on various revue-type shows. They were good dancers and fair singers. There was also some lip-synching. The show themes seemed kind of cheesy to us, but maybe viewers who are not from the U.S. would have a different reaction. It's hard to say because I know there are cultural differences in what's entertaining. To us, some of the shows were so cheesy that they were unintentionally hilarious, and those are the ones we enjoyed most. When the foil-covered foam spaceship took off in clouds of dry ice, I laughed so hard my sides hurt. The shows featured the same 5 or 6 songs every night, so by the end of the week we had them constantly running through our heads (especially Santana’s “Oye Como Va”, the “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” boxing theme, and “Meet the Muppets”).

Adult entertainment was not the Iberostar Paraiso’s strong point, although it was good for some giggles.

My wife and I love the performances and shows of the Iberostar Star Friends at all the resorts. These kids work their butts off, working 6 days a week from around 9:30a.m. until after the evening show ends and then most of them go to the disco afterwards to mingle with the vacationers. This ends up being 14-16 hour day for them, and at pay that you wouldn'e even have your kids work for. In response to CoralReef's view and feelings, I'm sure that he/she is in the minority, as people I've talked to who have been to this resort love the entertainment and the culture they provide. The whole spaceship show is meant to be funny and childish. The Star Friends dancing and production numbers are exceptional, but if you want Vega style numbers then don't expect anymore from kids working for pennies on the dollar. You'll love the shows!!
