Mexican Peso
Is it correct that the Peso is the only currency used and USD are not accepted anymore ? I seem to be hearing conflicting info on this subject
If that is the case does anyone know the entry & exit cost ? Many thanks |

There is only a departure tax that I know of, no entry fee
(for you Brits and other Europeans for whom it is not included in the airfare or package price-check to be sure it is not included!). It is about $45- $50 USD but it must be paid in cash AND in pesos, they are not accepting USD for that.http://www.travelyucatan.com/first-8.htm#DEPARTURE Currency to use in MX- if you are coming from the UK, just bring or get pesos....there is no reason or advantage to using USD. And while they are still accepting them, the Mexican gov't is trying to reduce the amount of USD in Mexico, so it's not recommended to use it. |

peso
If you are required to pay an exit fee-only pesos are accepted(not sure of amount)however in most cases the exit fee is included in price of ticket. If your airline has a baggage fee, I believe most will only accept pesos and or credit/debit card. The only problem I have seen lately in Playa regarding American money is that some places will not accept $20 or $100 bills.

My understanding is that merchants can and do accept USD, but they are not suppose to circulate the dollar, they are suppose to give change in Peso's and deposit the USD in the bank, My little bug is when I pay in Peso's they try to give me change in dollars, |

Little off the subject, but was wondering if any other ex pats has this same experience
I travel back to the States every year or so, and when I am in the grocery store or any store, I keep trying to figure out in my head how much it is in peso's, same thing at restaurants |

twent dollars
as I stated not all places but have ran into a few that wont take $20 bills because of apparent counterfeit problems. Havent had a problem in restaurants and shops on fifth-just a few places off of 5th. Walmart will accept them but they look them over with before accepting.

I have to say it......
If you were going to the UK or Italy or Canada or anywhere that had a different currency than your own, why would you bring USD and think you could use it? I can't use USD in Canada or the UK or Italy (I've been to all of them). I would never even try to use USD in a country where it's not the currency. Why expect Mexico to take currency that is not their own? Use Pesos. It's their currency. |
