I hope the authorities do something about this. I hate animal abuse...

I was just thinking.....that guy making money off of people taking pictures of that little cub with their own cameras.... that is insane. He has no proof he is doing what he's doing because he is not the one taking the pictures. And another thing, does this moron realize how much FOOD (and money) its going to take to feed a LION? Its more food than one would think...they grow fast, they need meat and this guy isn't going to be able to afford it's diet. What a shame.

you are being optimistic. Do you think he CARES about what the lion is going to eat when he will grow up? He will probably killi it or leave it in the smallest cage and throw him food whenever he has time.
they do this all the time. Check the Jane Goodall site for chimps. Same thing.
The real fault is that of ignorant, stupid people that FEED THIS MARKET. Without people willing to pay for this, these people wouuldn't even bother.
people suck.+
I ahven't seen him and I hope I won't becuase something I don't tollerate is animal cruelty.
AND YES FOR PETA WHEN THESE THINGS HAPPEN

SEMERNAT has the legal authority to seize these animals. They recently came in and took custody of 8 tigers being kept by an individual in Cancun. Last week, a sweep was made at Rancho Guadalupe in Playa removing all the animals there as well. Looks like they would be the people to contact.

8 Tigers Seized in Cancun

Sorry, the press release is in Spanish. Here is a translation:

"A legal battle for a decade by a fan of cats to retain their menagerie apparently ended Thursday when Mexican authorities seized eight tigers and two jaguars.

José Juárez Gil, who calls himself "Tigre Pepe", has faced accusations of private and governmental groups say the animals in their care suffer power, space and inadequate care.

The cats "are not treated in a dignified and respectful and the conditions under which they were confined was insecure," said in a statement the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).

There was no indication what the conditions were unsafe, but one of the tiger escaped from its cage in November last year and attacked a man who subsequently recovered from the wounds.

The secretariat said that the confiscated animals would be transferred to "places where they are guaranteed a dignified and respectful treatment and medical care and food", but did not specify where.

Some of the containers of animals found in the place of seizure labels showed a private zoo in the Midwest.

"The cats receive medical evaluations during his confinement and transfer," the Semarnat.

Gil Juarez argues that the government violated a restriction issued by the court to allow him to keep the animals, whom he calls "my kids." Ensures that the raid is part of a plan to seize the land where their makeshift zoo outside the Caribbean resort of Cancun."

I have to relate to the part about not wanting to end up in jail. My husband and I returned from Playa on April 29 and saw one of these cats on 5th Ave. sitting on a table. The guy tried to call me over and I told him I really didn't appreciate what he was doing! My husband had to lead me away before I caused a scene. I think it may have been a Jaguar...but it was black in color...not a lion cub. I kept thinking about what might happen to that animal in the not to distant future when it starts growing. Very sad.

If the cub is black then it's a jaguar.

It makes me sick, that this poor cub is on display.

Zeebee,

I'm going to give a ring to Semarnat's Office for the state of Quintana Roo. I hope to get a start on at least reporting this & finding out about the process. If there is not an English speaking person, I will ask Dr. Edgar of Coco's Cat Rescue to make a call. If you speak Spanish, the phone # is 011-52-612-123-9300.

Is this guy always in the same location? If so, what cross street by 5th is it? If we're lucky enough to get immediate action, I will need this info.

Thanks!
Maureen

Update: the office is closed for the day. I'll try in the morning.

Hi Maureen....thanks for getting involved. The cross street....I am not 100% certain but I know its in lower digits....like 6, 8 or 10th. At the top of the building it says in blue neon "Fifth Avenue Plaza". There are about 6 art galleries inside the building. We are so disturbed that if airfare was any less than it is now, we would go down there and picket.

They are between 6th and 8th street on 5th avenue. They are set up at a place that is called the 5th Avenue Plaza. It has a whole lot of art galleries. It's closer to 6th than 8th street.

I'll stay away from 6th and 8th
Did anyone see how much money the jerk with 2 tiny spider monkeys makes at Paseo del Carmen????? Every time I go there, people are actually lining up to take pictures with these poor babies. He always asks me if my daughter wants one too, and I NEVER shut up. . I do look like a mad woman for a few minutes, and he is not happy.

I've been having difficulty getting through to Semernat, Ministry of Environment & Natural Resouces. So, I have switched tactics & have contacted the following two US organiztions involved in the April Rescue of 8 Tigers in Cancun (via email & voice mail). I hope to get information on how to get the reporting & investigating process started. I'll report back as information is gathered.

LCA - Last Chance for Animals

Home | WildAnimalSanctuary.com : America's Premier Sanctuary For Large Carnivo

I will get continue to have attempts to contact Semernat with a Spanish speaking volunteer.
