my 2 pesos are, that yes it is a shame that someone would parade a lion around for some cash. But, I'm with whoever said it's the people who pay this guy that are the problem.
Supply and demand will keep this guy or people like him in business, much like other services/products widely available across the globe. I try and not judge how a brother git his money but rather, make my opinion known via not giving the time of day let alone a dime to people of this nature...

I so agree with you guys on the spider monkey.....but I think its more impotant to focus on the lion cub. I say this because the lion will grow up to be huge with a much needed food intake. If its shoved in a cage, it will get deformed and be under nurished.

...i must admit to having my picture taken with animals at the resorts in the past...i was young *ahem* and naive...i didn't mean harm by it, i just didn't think it through...(case in point, my avatar) ...since that time, however, the riu resorts stopped allowing animals-for-photos to be brought onto the resorts...and i have learned my lesson...
...if you find my avatar offensive for this reason i will be happy to change it, just let me know folks... ...i'm sure there are other animal lovers like myself, who found it enjoyable to visit with these animals for a time...i felt blessed for the opportunity, but i do know that it wasn't a good thing...

animals
I have my doubts the police can or will do anythng about it unless permits are checked. If said people have a permit then for sure nothing can be done. You know at least the tourist police see these animals everyday. The baby monkeys disturb me-they were captured in the jungle after their mother was killed. Several years ago, I remember a group of people set a picket line around that cage with the animals that you will see driving around town when the circus is in town. Apparently this wont work either, as I saw them driving around again this year when the circus was in town. Hopefully something can be done.

So far I have been in touch with two of the US organizations that were involved with the Tigers in Cancun. They have referred me to GEPDA, Genta por la Defensa Animal. This organization was instrumental in removing the tiger's from Pepe's Tiger "Zoo". GEPDA HOME I'm sad to say this took many years.
I'm learning that their are indeed Animal Wlfare laws on the books in Mexico, but enforcement of the laws is nearly non-existant. Pepe's Tigers have been taken from him, but they have not been released to the Wildlife Sanctuary that can provide a good life for them. The case is still ongoing & the tigers are being cared for in Mexico City. The surrendering of Pepe's Tigers was largely a result of years of petitioning & activism by Mexican & US citizens. Unfortunately, it was not a case of reporting the abuse & having the Mexican government respond. I have contacted GEPDA to learn how & where to report, have an investigation & learn what the laws are and who can enforse them. I'm waiting to hear back. Sorry it has been so slow in getting the ball rolling. Semernat has not responded to calls or email. I'll keep you updated. Maureen |

I was too saddened by this thread to even respond. I'd be tempted to shadow this guy with a big sign or something to alert tourists to the awful AWFUL situation this poor animal is currently and will continue to endure. Gawd, what is WRONG with people ![]() ![]()
