Hello Mel -
Welcome to the forum. While I really don't have definative answers to your questions, I wanted to respond as I am a huge animal lover and have two dogs of my own (my babies). If your heart is set on bringing your dog with you to Playa, I suggest you begin by researching the requirements of bringing a live animal into Mexico. It's my understanding that in order to bring a dog into Mexico from the United States, the dog must be current with all of its shots and have a certificate of health from a veterinarian. I don't believe there are any requirements to quarantine the animal. This may or may not be substantially different coming from Germany, you would have to check. That said.....If you were making a permanent move to Playa, my response would be different, but since you are coming for vacation, I would ask that you please reconsider. Your flight from Germany is quite a long one. Air travel is very difficult on animals, even those that are small enough to fly in the cabin (they have to be small enough to fit under the seat). Animals that must travel in the cargo hold of the plane can sometimes be subjected to drastic changes in temperature, can escape from their kennel, or many other frightening things. Additionally, your dog may end up having to spend a lot of time alone in your hotel as dogs are no longer allowed to run on the beach in Playa. I miss my dogs terribly when I vacation, but I have a very reliable pet sitter that I trust to love and care for my pets during my absence (I even receive email updates from her). I also believe they are much happier in their familiar and comfortable surroundings. We all have a very happy reunion upon my return. - Tyra |

Coming from Germany, I think your biggest issue would be to bring the dog back from Mexico. Do check this as different countries in Europe have different rules. There's also an issue (for some airlines?) with changes in temperture at your departure destination and your arrival destination - there are restrictions if the difference exceeds a certain number. A friend of mine was planning to bring her dog from Mexico to Norway in the winter and couldn't do it.

And you also need to be aware of things your dog could catch while in Mexico. For example he will need to be on Heartworm medication and there is some illness he can get from Ticks and others from Mosquitos etc.
Also he could catch things like Mange and other doggie illnesses that are carried by the poor doggies roaming the Streets and Beach. We also have 2 smalish Dogs that we love and we would not put them through this for only 3 weeks and we only have a short flight from California. We moved our Cat from Germany to California and it was an ordeal for the Cat even so he was in the Passenger Compartment with us. It was not a good experience for the Cat at all but we where moving for good and he had to come with us. If you stay 3 month it might be worth while it but not for only 3 weeks. |

Puppy
Hello Mel,
I, like Tyra and Munichick, love dogs and cats. I would be concerned about traveling with such a young pup. Especially at that age when his/her immune system is not as strong as an adult dog. I, too, hate to leave my two spoiled babies, but I know that they will be more comfortable with friends. alicia |

I love dogs, too. Unfortunately for dog lovers (quite possibly fortunately for health reasons), dogs are now prohibited on Playa beaches, with severe fines to owners who bring them onto the sand and also possibly to establishments with concessions that allow them to stay there. (I know -- we got a letter about the amounts involved from the director of health of the city.) So if what you say is true, Mamita's might want to watch out. But anyway, whatever else your plan is, you may want to forget it if it involved the dog at the beach.

I'm glad you decided to leave the dog home. On our last trip, there was a woman in our condo's that spent most of her vacation nursing her sick little Yorkie. He had a difficult time from the flight there and she was worried sick what would happen when she flew him home. And she had only flown from the USA.

Mel, you made a very good decission. Of course it is hard to leave the little sweetheart with someone or at a Kennel for 3 weeks but in the end you know he is save and will be so happy to see you when you come home. Have a great Vacation!

Dogs In PDC
My husband and I were in PDC for a week in Feb. And again in April. The first trip we rented a beautiful house in Playacar (we have 3 kids) and we saw many people with dogs (and 1 monkey) on the beaches. In April, we stayed in town at Posada Freud and again, saw quite a few folks with beasts on the beach. Now my question....we will be moving to PDC in the fall and plan to bring our 8 year old yellow lab. He loves the beach!!! In your collective opinion, do you think the doggie police are more likely to be patroling the PDC Hotel/Restaurant zone primarily? If we end up living further south into Playacar or in an area north of town, do you think we will have much of a hassle? My dog's quality of life will certainly have bearing on our choice of location.
Looking forward to your thoughts. |
