We stayed at the Riu Yucatan in Nov 06. Went over to Riu Playacar to see how it looked, and it looked great - all fresh paint, bar added to the lobby, fantasitc grounds. We have stayed there twice in the past, returning 2/2/07 with friends. We too got a great price out of NH. This place is great!
Plus, 5 mins from down town playa - it can 't get any better than that.
