My vote would be for Aventura Mexicana. Nice location, a couple of blocks from the beach, free pass to lounge chairs at KOOL on the beach, nice rooms, small fridge in each room, great staff, nice pools, great food, quiet, tv, internet. The AI is only $20 more per day, which we easily used up for breakfast, water, appetizers and drinks through out the day.

Our bathroom/room had a complete wall. We were in a standard room. But, Madisson's (Michelle) room had some cool designs and not straight walls. Her's might not have, but I didn't see the bathroom.

Just make sure you are not traveling with someone tall, and they won't be able to see over that opening there may be...

Lisa had also read on TA about the bathroom comments. She had read that some had no doors. She commented after we got back, stating we had doors, floor to ceiling.

I think a lot depends on your budget, and the location you desire. Also, if you want breakfast included, or not. Our last stay in Playa, we stayed at the Bric Hotel, and we loved it. Great location, clean and comfortable rooms, pool, and fresh cooked FULL breakfast every morning. All this, and the price was very cheap.

My vote is for Playa Maya on the beach @ calle 8. The staff is amazing! They have a small pool that is great for cooling off. The food is great and breakfast is included every morning (not just a basket of toast w/juice). The rooms are very clean, have great A/C, color TV, and a mini fridge that is filled the first day (they will supply bottled water daily). We have stayed many times with Playa Maya and will continue to stay in the future. Look at the website and you will see that they offer discounts for the more days that you stay. More money to spend while in Playa! J Forgot to add that the rooms @ Playa Maya also have an in room safe and hair dryer. And you can order drinks or lunch on the beach and have it billed to your room.

My thoughts exactly. Traveling alone, the room rate was great for a standard using the deal for 7 days and being a "returning guest". Lil 'ol me can only eat and drink so much but that does save plenty for whatever I may want!

This is such a cute little hotel and since its upgrades and new name probably not really known about still. There is a nice pool in the courtyard also and I can promise you their showers will blow all other hotels/condos away (which can be an issue in this hard water area) - so if a good location, pool, great staff, fab breaky and the best shower ever is important to you....seriously consider this one Its on 26th between 5th and 10th.

Oh yea, I forgot about the showers....wonderful. And, also a free internet kiosk, if you so desire.

Honestly for the price, I don't think it can be beat...just hope they keep the low prices.

We have stayed at Playa Maya, and it is wonderful, but a whole lot more money.

So, as I said, it will really depend on your budget, and what is important to you.

I checked the rates for May in 2012 for both and the only price difference is $60.00 total. For me I'd gladly pay $60.00 to stay on the beach.

Oh, I totally agree, but we always go in Feb-Mar, and believe me, Playa Maya is a lot more at that time, and that is, if you can even get a room there. Also, when we stayed at PM, you did not get a FULL breakfast.

Just wanted to jump in here, as I'm wondering about the last point in particular. Our breakfast service has been the same for years in terms of what guests receive, so I'm guessing either you stayed with us quite some time ago (this would have to be, say, 2004 or earlier) or perhaps different people have different definitions of what constitutes a full breakfast or something. Guests staying with us can choose each morning from 3-4 combinations, some lighter and some more complete, but all free. So for example you could have toast, eggs, bacon/sausage, juice and coffee and not incur any extra charges. Or you could swamp out the eggs for hotcakes or waffles in another combination, or others focus on lighter fare such as fruit and yogurt, etc. But in any event, it's not the case that the breakfast varies by season or something. (That's never been true here.)

And actually I just booked 2 couples for mid-February earlier today.
