The Reef Round 2

No pics here only an evaluation. Last year was my first time to playa so I guess I was basically stunned at the beauty. This year however I must have been looking for something more Day one I found out that the internet we had last year is no longer free. I am now required to pay which I completely understand. When my children returned to us from the lobby saying we had to pay for the internet I found out you have to pay 30 per device. Iím guessing this is the norm for the area but I was still upset none the less. They gave me complementary internet on another device. The resort is ....well I guess the new for me wore off and I started to notice little things here and there. I donít wane say its run down but it is on the edge of that. Several staff was very rude. The entire time. What they didnít know was that I donít tip till the end of my trip and trust me I made sure several of them seen the others get tips. I probably should not have done that but they earned it many times. In our first room our air was broken we had no ceiling fan. Now understand I rented two rooms for 6 nights one for the wife and I and one for my three girls. This my second time at this resort. I thought I might get a small view of the ocean. Nope that would be the room with two queen beds. The room with the king was facing the other way. Well after complaining about the air and fan situation they moved us to a room with air and calling fan but the view remained. Its cool though I mean its not that terrible were in Mexico I think we can deal. Guess I thought we should have been treated a little better. I tried to speak to the manager several times but was told he was busy ever time. As someone who works in management my performance affects others performance so I suspect that this may be happening at the Reef. Donít get me wrong most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. From the guys sweeping to the bartenders. The main buffet is what it is not much flavor but it will do. On Several occasions the snack bar which was to fill in between meal times was not open. They had it in the theater once but there was no sign. I asked several workers why the snack bar was closed they just shrugged there shoulders and said I donít know they donít tell me anything. So I think it may be a management problem. We heard the noise coming from the theater and were able to grab some food just before they put away the food. They have two other restaurants which are superb! A resort for kids? No A resort for your first time to Mexico on the cheap I hesitate to say yes, because you would enjoy your trip so much more if you pay a little more. Will I go back to the Reef NO defiantly not unless it had no other choice. Sorry Reef but you are what you are we had some good times but im afraid our relationship has ended indefinitely.

Eeeek! This report makes me nervous. My husband and I are staying at the Reef in October. We wanted a small place and something inexpensive for a short trip. Since we booked through our travel agent, I assumed it would be an okay place.

It's just two of us, so we can "rough" it for this trip at least. (sigh)

Or if you like the idea of AI, try Riu or Barcelo or Sandos, etc...

Personally I'm a fan of the Riu properties since they have everything I'm looking for in one spot & I'm not hard to please.

well if this is your first trip dont worry. Playa is so beautifull you wont even notice the things i mentioned. There is an RIU right next door that is beautiful. Next time i go to Paya im gonna try Bacelo playa palace delux. Im sure my spelling is wrong on that but i meet several people that owned time shares there and had nothing but good things to say about it!

Well.. we will be staying at the Reef this year, in 8 days actually... This is not our first trip to Playa.. have stayed at the Gran Porto 3 times and Sandos Playacar once but we got such an awsome deal at the Reef this year we decided to go with it... As long as we have a bed to flop down on at night and a shower in the morning we are pretty good to go so we are really looking forward to getting there! I know the Reef probably doesn't compare to Gran Porto or Sandos but for the money we saved by booking there I thought it was well worth a try!! Can't wait.. Sorry you didn't have a good time because I know your trip report the first time was great, one of the reasons we decided to go ahead and give it a try (medicaldawg), lol... oh well.. let you know on July 19th when we return how our trip went!!

I don't recommend this resort to clients, I tell people it's not very good and basically, I just about refuse to book it. Don't like it, don't think it's worth the money - no matter how cheap it is. People say they don't care, it was cheap, how bad could it be, just need a bed and a pillow, etc. That's all well and good, and my last clients who stayed here said that too. Until their 4 kids got so sick with food poisioning they had to be hospitalized, and the whole family had to change resorts mid-stay. If I was booked here and didn't know it wasn't very nice when I booked, I'd be on the phone with my travel agent looking to switch hotels. Spend a little more for a better resort. Meh is being generous!

It's the Barcelo Maya Palace. And they don't have time shares at Barcelo, they have what they call a "vacation club", where you buy nights for future stays. Bad deal, pricing is better when you book each stay individually.

We were Ai people for years until we started doing the condo thing, We won't be doing AI any more, condos are the way to go. So much freedom and choices.
