Low-Key Wedding

So glad I found this message board! My partner and I are planning to get married in Playa del Carmen in mid-late October 2003. We want a VERY casual wedding, i.e. in our shorts on the beach (no cake, no flowers, no white dress, etc). Is this relatively easy to do, or do they try to talk you into spending big bucks and going all-out? Any recommendations on good places to go?
Thanks!

wedding coordinator

My fiance and I were planning on marrying at the Riu Palace but have heard so many bad things about the coordinator there as well as the fact that the resort does not have a very 'tropical' setting.

Can anyone suggest a good coordinator and provide me with their info?? I would be willing to change hotels as long as I can get good service with the coordinator.

Thanks!!

Riu Palace

SunWorshipper, where did you hear bad things about the wedding coordinator at the Riu Palace?? What did you hear? (My fiancee & I are thinking of getting married there early 2004).

I know that the Riu Palace uses a new coordinator now, is that who you heard bad things about (or about the older one?)

wedding at the Riu

I just thought I would give my thoughts on wedding planning in the Mayan Riveria. My fiancee and I had been set on the Bahia Principe Akumal or Tulum for May 2004. We were notified 3 weeks ago that they had no available dates for our week to do weddings. So, six months away from the wedding we are scrambling to find a new resort. This what we found:

First 3 hotels we picked:

"Barcelo Maya Beach Resort"

Took a couple days to respond and then proceeded to explain the whole process for getting married at their resort instead of a simple yes we can do it that week. This guys name was Marcos, he is not the wedding coordinator but he said we needed to speak to that person and reserve a day. Well..duh, thats what we emailed him for. Could he not have forwarded the message?
I emailed again...a couple days later I get an email saying the 3 days we chose were unavailable and the 1 day was a Mexican Holiday, therefore no weddings available. I emailed again with another date and again 3 days later I get a response that they only have 1:00 pm time slot and that there are 2 other wedding booked that day.

My issues:

a couple days to respond to emails is way too slow. Secondly, I tried to call and I actually got Marcos but he said I needed to speak to the coordinator and transfered me. I was transfered 2 times and ended up leaving a message on a answering machine that was complete spanish. Don't even know if it was the right person. Needless to say, no one called me back. Lastly, I really am not thrilled about being crammed in 1 day with 2 other weddings. That is just asking for trouble.

"Colonial Palladium Grand Resort & Spa - Maya Riviera"

Simple story, I emailed, called and left a message with a woman and emailed again. 3 weeks later, not a single email or phone call.

Iberostar Paraiso Beach Hotel

a little quicker response, but again no confirmation of date just details on their wedding packages.

a second try at asking for dates, a WEEK later I get a response that they have no available dates.

So now we have to look for other resorts. We chose the Riu Tequila or Yucatan. I would prefer the Palace but we are trying to make it affordable for everyone. We emailed the Tequila yesterday (generic email address from their website) and it was forwarded onto the wedding coordinator Ana Lopez. One day it took her to get back to us! and she was right to the point, WE HAVE THOSE DAYS AVAILABLE. I don't know about the responses posted about their bad wedding coordination, but they are so far the quickest and brightest of them all!

I will be sure to keep everyone posted on our progress!

Weddings in Cancun

I was married in Playa in February and we used an outside Wedding Co-ordinator. They did an amazing job with our Wedding, everything was perfect!! We were married at Xcaret, and had our reception back at our hotel (Riu Yucatan). They did everything for us, transportation from hotel to Xcaret and back, to the Flowers, and the Photographer.

This is a great company to deal with, their web-site is

www.weddingsincancun.com

GOOD LUCK

Um...sorry!

Can someone provide me with the contact information for the individuals listed that handle the El Dorado Resort Wedding? I am having no luck getting anywhere when contacting the resort directly. Thanks!

Thecuz,

I'm getting married in Playa in May *yippee* and we're using the ElDorado Royale which is adults only. The Iberostar Tucan also was wonderful but didn't get back to us in time. Good luck to you!

RE; Wedding at el dorado

Hi Runaway Bride,

We stayed at the El Dorado in Dec 2001 and absolutely loved it. I think you will be very happy with your decision. Did you decide where at the resort you are getting married? We watched a wedding when we where there, and it was in the white gazebo that is in front of the ocean. I took a picture of the gazebo (not during the wedding) and it is beautiful with the blue turqoise water in the background. Just thought I would mention to you that this seemed like a beautiful site for a wedding. I am sure they have many choices or locations. Congratulations on your wedding
