Merk--One quick tip for beach walking if you are so inclined, watch where you are going! I am a beach walker from way back but you have to be careful here until you get past the rocks, don't try to look out at the sea and walk at the same time until you get beyond a certain point (you will know what I mean once you are there), or you will have a stubbed toe or two. Stop to look at the water and then keep going, some of those little rocks like to hide!

Linda,

You mean a month after my vacation I still have a stark white circle on my wrist and I could have cut the wrist band off without repercussions?! Aack! My friend who travelled with me for part of the week almost had hers off and I warned her she may not be able to get it back on. She's gonna kill me when I tell her you cut yours off.

I was already thinking about cutting the stupid wrist band off and just carry it when at the resort and show it to them if needed.
There is no way I am hanging out in PDC with a wristband if you know what I mean!
Merk! It sounds like you have the same type of vacation in mind as we do. Do you want to meet up for a drink on the 9th at the pool bar? We are in our 30's and are childfree!

Munichchick-Sounds great! I am also in my 30's and child free. I'm traveling solo and will be the fish-belly-glowing-white gal sampling the margaritas. I arrive on the 8th and plan on relaxing a day or two before heading over to Cozumel. See ya at the bar!

Hey Merk and Munichchick; do that, get together, then maybe you can negotiate better rates into town via the taxis (or, I forget, is one of you renting a car?)We seemed to get much better rates when there were more than 2 of us.

Yes, you can cut the wristband off, I was the last in our group to do so (ever the "by the rules" person that I am, and then the only people that questioned us (and only once) was the security guard at the pool. Don't worry about taking them off.

Munichchick--I know that you have been to the area before. Do you scuba and or snorkel? If you all haven't been to Chakanaab Park over in Cozumel, it is worth a visit. It's a national park with a fee of $10 pp. (US) with snorkeling and a lot of other things for people to do for the day, pretty much for novices though, I"m sure that if you are avid snorkel/scuba people that you know of other spots that are better.

I think that I mentioned walking the beach the other day, here's a follow-up. Head out North (left) and walk all the way up past 2 houses on the beach, the first looks deserted, the second usually has a small sailboat out front, anyway, my husband found some beautiful, huge conch shells on that stretch of beach. Some were on the shore (mostly broken ones) but most of the "good" ones you had to be in the water and do a little digging for. He proudly displayed them all vacation long in the room and then we returned them to the deep before we left. It did give the man a thrill to find them though on his daily "hunt"!

My daughters just arrived three hours ago and are staying at the Mayan Palace, Cancun. Does this place have a phone number? I can't find any info on contacts, etc. Thanks,
Pam.

My husband and I were married in October and are going to the Mayan Palace for our honeymoon March 30-April 7. We, too, got a great deal and would like to know the names of nice restaurants and shopping spots in PDC. We're in our early 30's and are looking forward to a relaxing time. After reading these boards, we're wondering if we should rent a car. Hmmmm.

I have the actual hotel phone #, don't know if that's what you need. The international prefix (I think that's what its called) is 011-52, then the phone# for the Palace is (984) 206-4000. I don't know if it's a direct call or operator assist.

Good Luck! Linda

Aimee, (that's my daughter's name and spelling), I can recommend a few restaurants but there are so many that I would be sure to leave some out, I'm sure that others here will also help you out. We just returned on the 22nd, and our favorites were Ajua ( a little pricey but great food and service), La Parilla, Media Luna, Karen's Pizza, and in Puerto Morales, about a $8-10 (US) cab ride from the palace, a place called Los Pelicanos, great seafood and a great view of the beautiful water.

We did not rent a car but wish that we would have, we could have done more sightseeing on our own and saved money on cabs into town. I know that Munichchick who is leaving this week-end has rented a car, maybe she can help you out on her return.

Thanks Linda, I was able to get that number and called the girls last night. They are very disappointed in the location. They are two of four friends who went together. I think they are looking for things to do and don't have a lot of $ to spend on taxis. Though they said the place is lovely. They used up my 300 minute calling card that I gave them to use there with two calls amounting to about 30 minutes! I guess I better renew it at Sam's Club! Anyway thanks for the help!

Thanks, Linda, for the helpful information! I think we'll be smart to look into renting a car for the week. If you think of any other "spots" we might want to hit, let me know. We enjoy people watching and shopping too!

Merk!!!! We will get to Playa on the 7th and spend 2 nights in town so we can realy party without having to worry about driving etc.
However, we will check in on the 8th to make sure we get a good room and than we will return on the 9th. I will look for you around the pool and bar on the 9th. I am
pre-tanned, blond, 5.9' with the German accent and California Surfer Dude husband. I hope we will meet for sure. We have a rental car and will not mind to give you ride into town for dinner etc. This way you just have to take a taxi back home whenever you are ready to return. We love having a car on trips because we don't like to be tight down to any schedules or anything else. See you there.

Aimee! Renting a car is the way to go if you are staying away from town unless you have a budget for taxi fares. I recommend Avis or Budget and reserving the car in advance through their US Reservations. You can pick up and return at the Cancun airport and both company's are reputable and we had only good experiences.

Yeah, I was told that you use 8 minutes of calling time for every minute in Mx. We also get our cards at Sam's Club, the only way to go. Tell the girls (depending on their age) that most of the action for young people seems to be on the beaches in Playa itself, they can take the bus into town for only about 8 pesos (the Mayab bus, it's green and red and white, if I remember correctly), they need to take the little mini shuttle from the hotel lobby to the main gate, then cross the highway and wait for it, it should say Mayab right on the front. It will stop for them and drop them off at the end of the line at the bus stop right in town by McDonalds, then they can buy a ticket and take it back later or grab a cab, but that will cost about 120-150 pesos to go back. Hope this helps.

Munichchick-
Sounds like a plan for Saturday! I'm NOT tan(it's the "minnesnowta glow") and about 5'7" with shoulder length brown hair. Thanks so much for offering transportation but I've also rented a car for the week, for all the same reasons you did. I did upgrade from a basic manual to an automatic with air for $210, not including dreaded tax, from Thrifty. I had originally booked with Avis but the price seemed fair with Thrifty. I am a bit worried about driving back from PDC in the evening, might just have to take a cab.
Have a good flight and we'll see you Saturday!
