Hekab Be Library needs school supplies for local children

One of our favorite local not for profits, Hekab Be Library in Akumal, has published their annual "Back to School" Wishlist and we would like to help by sharing this with our "Life's a Beach" readers and Playa peeps. We so often receive inquiries from customers and friends traveling to the Riviera Maya wondering what they can bring for the local school children in the region and how it will reach the intended recipients. The staff and volunteers at Hekab Be Library have been working with local children in this area for over 12 years and we were pleased to include them as a featured charity in our "12 Days/12 Ways" series which debuted last year.

I already started buying stuff for the Library and will see what else I can bring from the list. Unfortunately, I won't be able to deliver them until Thanksgiving week. But like they say... better late than never.

Thanks for posting Michele

Aw, the visit to the library was one of the highlights of our trip in June. I hope they get all they need and then some!

Great thread, Michele! The past few years I've been bringing down at least a package of markers to drop off at the Library. I'll try to remember to check with the Library before we come down next April to see what specifics they need and try to bring more.

For anyone travelling from Canada keep this in mind. I just got off the phone with WestJet and they will allow 1 extra FREE checked bag per person for humanitarian purposes. They can be checked in at your normal check in and they do not require a letter or anything from the organization the donations are going to.

we are coming out in a couple of weeks ... I had bought extra school supplies, crayons etc. when I was buying for my grandson ... I had brought out a bunch another time we came and was told to drop them off at Vagabunda I believe. We will be heading out to Akumel for a day and was happy to find this thread. Does anyone know if they are still wanting this stuff? Will the school be open mid to late January?

The library should be open but if not, you can leave things at Super Chomak and they will be properly distributed.

The library hours of operation are:

Mon, Tues, Thurs & Fri: 9:30 am-5:30 pm (closed 1-2:30 for lunch)
Weds 12-5:30 (closed 1-2:30 for lunch),
Saturday 9:00 am-1 pm
Closed Sunday

I have printed their updated wish list here!
